Jenna Miscavige Hill, niece of Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige, was raised as a Scientologist but left the controversial religion in 2005. In Beyond Belief, she shares her true story of life inside the upper ranks of the sect, details her experiences as a member Sea Org - the church's highest ministry - speaks of her "disconnection" from family outside of the organization, and tells the story of her ultimate escape.

I really enjoyed this book, but I have to say that I didn't find Jenna to be a likable person which makes it even more real. There were times where her descriptions made her sound flat out crazy to me. I guess living in a different reality then everyone else can do that to you. I'm very glad she wrote the book and that I could learn from her experience.

The book feels like it's being written for children because of the tone it sets. I think it might have something to do with Jenna's limited education. That being said it was still entertaining and well performed.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with ears.

Thousands of autonomous computer programs, or daemons, make our networked world possible, running constantly in the background of our lives, trafficking e-mail, transferring money, and monitoring power grids. For the most part, daemons are benign, but the same can't always be said for the people who design them.

This is one of the best books I've listened to in a while. Its just flat out amazing. It goes in so many different unpredictable directions. To top it off I don't know who I'm rooting for which makes it even better.

In the near future, at a moment no one will notice, all the dazzling technology that runs our world will unite and turn against us. Taking on the persona of a shy human boy, a childlike but massively powerful artificial intelligence known as Archos comes online and assumes control over the global network of machines that regulate everything from transportation to utilities, defense and communication. In the months leading up to this, sporadic glitches are noticed by a handful of unconnected humans - a single mother, a lonely Japanese bachelor, and an isolated U.S. soldier....

I think the book was ultimately good, but I kept having issues with the dialogue. It felt like it was supposed to be real dialogue and things people would say in a conversation, but it never happened. It felt more like someone was reading was was written as opposed to having a conversation. This was not the narrators fault. Its totally an issue with how things were written.

Ultimately it was still a decent book though.

World-renowned novelist Mark Helprin offers a ringing Jeffersonian defense of private property in the age of digital culture, with its degradation of thought and language, and collectivist bias against the rights of individual creators.

I was really looking forward to reading this book and hearing good arguments about Anti-Piracy, but thats nto what this book was about. It was more about why copyrights were important. In doing so thought it did not give a good impression on why Piracy was a real issue. The book spent a lot of time going over things that didn't seem to have anything to do with the argument at all. I'd say it felt like 75% of the book felt unnecessary.

Also the author stoops to the pirates level and does some name calling when reffering to them. I understand that he might have been a little hurt by all of the negative comments he had previously recieved in his articles, but it doesn't look good to me when your trying to take the moral high road, and still trying to insult others with immature name calling.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

    Sara says: "A terrifying story"

This is one of the book is definitely in my top 10 of all time. I was looking for a good post apocalyptic book and this one fit the bill perfectly!

  • Empire: The Empire Duet, Part 1

Orson Scott Card is a master storyteller, who has earned millions of fans and reams of praise for his previous science-fiction and fantasy works. Now he steps a little closer to the present day with this chilling look at a near-future scenario: a new American Civil War. The American Empire has grown too fast, the fault lines at home are stressed to the breaking point, and the war of words between Right and Left has collapsed into a shooting war.

Andrea says: "Good pace, weak premise"
    "Another great work by Card"
    Overall

Its scrary how plausible he makes this out to be. The parallels drawn between America and Rome and why we aren't Rome is pretty interesting. Also the Red state Blue state issues were addressed well.

Its a really good book and I highly recommend it to any other Card fans.

    *Spoiler Alert*
The only thing I had a problem with is that the civil war wasn't big enough.
