OOhhhhh...such a hard book to read or listen to -- at first - then it is as great as David Copperfield or his other works. The characters are so well exemplified. Mr. Dickens is a wonder to beyond at creating characters and making them so believeable and entertaining. You really get to “know” them. Everyone, give this reading a real chance. This is one of my favorite all-time books. Bravado!
And, Martin Jarvis, reading is fantastic. I question if there was indeed only one reader. He plays each character. I would almost call it a dramatization.
A great story. A heartfelt story. Yet -- history. You learn something in the reading (or listening) of this story. Human nature - be it compassion or barbarism - is human nature and we are probably all capable of both put into certain circumstances.
All in all, this is so worth your time. It is entertaining, enlightening, and pure wonder at the wisdom of Dickens words. I loved it!!
I really enjoyed the story. The narration was well also. And....BUT, there was a lot of cliches, over-dramatization, and over-description of everything. It was tiring at times. True, Takeo has an acute sense of sight and hearing and maybe that's why - but gee. Again, I say, though, that the story was entertaining, emotionally moving, and an insight into the lands and times of ancient and 'mythical' Japan -- so much so that I am tempted to download the sequel; but there is too much to choose from. -- Download and listen to this book if you like having everything thoroughly described to you and an interesting story. It could have been so much more.
I enjoyed this book very much. Having spent two years in Japan, I loved hearing of it's culture and lifestyles. It is a beautiful place! The narration was excellent! I felt it was her voice. This book was worth every minute spent and I am sad it is over. The movie does not even begin to compare or live up to it. (Even my 16 year old son enjoyed what he heard!) It's books like these that open a part of the world and time that I love so much!! I am enriched.
An enjoyable and enlightening aspect of reading is being able to 'view' others' lives and worlds. That is what makes this book so fascinating. You get to see other places, other people - in various times. Some stories are very touching, some funny, a few amazing, and some just enjoyable. It is a relaxing listening and worth the time. My favorite story being "I Thought My Father Was God," as the title. Enjoyable.
The sad part is this is not a true story - which is hard to believe. It is so believable, that I feel it must be true! Afghanistan has a truly tragic history that so many of us know nothing about. (We are all people and they deserve a life of freedom and prosperity as each of us do.)
It provokes so much feelings for the characters -good and bad. I would love a sequel. I truly miss the characters and reading their story. This is one of my all-time favorite reads.
