"Only Bryson book I gave up on"
The very long prelude is persuasive that there's not much known for sure about Shakespeare... and then goes into absurdly tiny detail about the supposed life he led.
I couldn't force myself to continue... but based on my prior enjoyment of Bryson's OTHER work, I would still try another of his books without concern.

Very thoughtful book, with very compelling ideas presented in calm but strong crystalline prose.
I wish others wrote as clearly or tackled hard ideas so well.
This is a most utilitarian response to the sometime-mean-spririted atheism of other essays. The gist is that we need to foster and embrace a scientific approach to morality and values.

I lived through this era (young, but present & alert) and didn't know lots of what the Pentagon Papers were about, and what their attempted suppression led to. Very impressive narrative of an individual's self-endangerment for an intentional & noble purpose.
