"Wonderful"
Beautifully written and narrated, it grabs your heart unexpectedly and you must find out what happens. Listen to this classic but simply told story of war, and the redemptive love of service. It is an amazing story!
"Lovely"
This is a sweet, charming and very entertaining mystery featuring a heroine you can really enjoy. I loved it because it was light and easy and just made me smile.
The narrator is Katherine Kellgren and I have to admit I picked the book because she was narrating it. She could read me the phone book and I'd probably love it. She is the best narrator by far that I've heard in recent years, and her range and reminds me at times of the great Frank Muller.
"Rambling"
A good novel is tightly woven; each detail has a purpose. This is not that kind of novel. This is a rambling history of the war in the pacific overlaid with a love story whose events seem both cliched and absurdly impossible. It's not a bad book, in fact it's absorbing at times, it's just way too long and annoyingly repetitive. If you are looking for a well written, tightly plotted novel with a satisfying conclusion, keep looking, this is not the book for you. If you don't mind strange tangents, characters without purpose, and an interesting view of the WW2 Pacific theater, it's OK.
"Terrible"
Banal, predictable, dull and frankly absurd. The narration is simply awful. I couldn't even get through more than an hour. Don't buy this junk. If you want a thriller like this one buy anything by Lee Child instead, as this is a thin, poorly written copy.
"Wonderful"
Brilliant characters whom you love and don't want to give up living with. Buy it and be happy you did!
"Lazy"
If this is meant for 12 year old boys then it's fine. Otherwise it's lazy, predictable, and unimaginative. If she actually wrote this she should retire, if she passed the project off to an apprentice I want my money back. I used to say I'd read anything with Miles in it; I take it back. This is juvenile junk.
"Thrilling"
I too resisted this book thinking, "oh, it's not my style". It deserves all the rave reviews. It is funny, intelligent, insightful and entertaining all at once. I was so absorbed all I wanted to do was listen to these fantastic narrators. Do yourself a favor and buy this one!!
"Dull narrative of events already completed"
I wanted to like it, but just couldn't get involved when I already knew what was going to happen. A bit dated for current thrillers, though very well written.
"Barry Eisler should stick to writing"
Not a bad thriller but he is either too cheap or too narcissistic to hire a real actor for the narration. What a shame! This book would be so much better narrated by someone who can actually act, or read with skill. However, his books still keep me engrossed so don't let it keep you from buying the book.
It ends very abruptly though, as if he needed to meet some kind of deadline. If you need the story to be wrapped up wait until the next book comes out.
"Just awful"
I can barely bring myself to listen to this. Poorly written, badly plotted, and just generally terrible. Don't waste your money!
