William Dorrit has been a resident of the Marshalsea debtors prison for so many years that he has gained the nickname "The Father of the Marshalsea". However, his suffering is eased by his close bond with youngest daughter Amy, or "Little Dorrit". The dashing Arthur Clennam, returning to London after many years in China, enters their lives and the Dorrits' fortunes begin to rise and fall. A biting satirical work on the shortcomings of 19th century government and society.

    "Brilliant reading"
    Overall

Marvellous voices. I was able to recognize which character was speaking from the first word. Lesser is a master at characterization. I found myself looking forward to encountering them again and again. Flora in particular was a delight.

Becky Sharp, a willful, resourceful, and charming pleasure-seeker, uses her finishing school credentials and connections to get a job as a governess. In her new position, she wins the hearts of the moneyed young and old and is soon living well beyond her means. Meanwhile, her boarding-school friend Amelia Sedley is honest but poor and must give her son into the care of his grandfather, who will have nothing to do with her. The two meet up again at the novel's ironic climax.

    "Uneven"
    Overall

Odd intonation and emphasis, often on unimportant words. Glottal stops all over the place. Can't seem to say three words in a row without one. Can't do male voices... all her men sound like they're choking to death. Very irritating. I would have stopped listening early except that I'd paid for it. Why is a woman reading a book by a man written from a man's point of view?

At the center of Middlemarch is Dorothea Brooke, a thoughtful and idealistic young woman determined to make a difference with her life. Enamored of a man who she believes is setting this example, she traps herself into a loveless marriage. Her parallel is Tertius Lydgate, a young doctor from the city whose passionate ambition to spread the new science of medicine is complicated by his love for the wrong woman.
