When Rob Hale wakes up in hospital after a motorcycle crash, he is told that Lena - the gorgeous blonde woman who was on the back of his bike - doesn't exist. The woman he describes bears a striking resemblance to his recently deceased sister, Laura, but has he really only imagined her? Convinced that Lena is as real as he is, Rob teams up with Rebecca Lewis - a London-based PI who has a mysterious connection to Laura - to follow the clues. He learns that even a close-knit community like the Isle of Man can hide dangerous secrets that will not stay safe forever.

Although the ratings weren't as high as most of the books I read, I wanted to give it a chance. I wanted to like it. The premise is fascinating. Many aspects of the plot are interesting, but it doesn't fit together.

  • State of Fear

Once again Michael Crichton gives us his trademark combination of page-turning suspense, cutting-edge technology, and extraordinary research. State of Fear is a superb blend of edge-of-your-seat suspense and thought provoking commentary on how information is manipulated in the modern world.

    Story

As you may have read in other reviews the narration is atrocious. That is an understatement! It makes audible look bad. If this was one of my first audiobooks, I wouldn't buy any more. You can hear him flip pages, he clears his voice incessantly, and he leaves extended gaps between chapters. I am shocked that audible would sell this book or that Michael Crichton would approve the publication of such a poor performance.
So, can I honestly give an accurate review about the story - no. The bashing of the Global warming theory gets old. The point could have been made in 30 minutes and then we could get back to the Michael Crichton we all love.
One aspect I loved though - it brought up - the theory that the political, legal and media forces control the general public. It discusses how this changed from the military controlling the population. This present control occurs as politicians and the media promote a state of fear. Facinating theory!
In the end, I could read the book again in hard copy format and skip a hundred pages or so. But my time is valuable, so I won't.

  • The Poisoner's Handbook: Murder and the Birth of Forensic Medicine in Jazz Age New York

In The Poisoner's Handbook, Blum draws from highly original research to track the fascinating, perilous days when a pair of forensic scientists began their trailblazing chemical detective work, fighting to end an era when untraceable poisons offered an easy path to the perfect crime.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

As long as I knew that I was in that friend's good graces.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

While it is history, it is a light read that compels the reader to learn more.

What does Coleen Marlo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Sometimes the narrator is the reason you pick the book. (My narrator is Barbara Rosenblat.) I would pick up another book based on Marlo's reading. The cadence and tone are pleasing.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My reaction was that of hunger. This book was an easy read and I want more.

As well as writing about his first love, cars, James has a go at political correctness, the endless rules and regulations of daily life, the internal combustion engine and traffic wardens. He discusses gastropubs, Jeremy Clarkson, and other trials of modern life. His highly entertaining observations from behind the wheel will have you laughing out loud, whether you share his opinions or not.

Who was your favorite character and why?

James May it is a personal narrative.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Mr. Slow in the Fast Lane (but please don't make a movie)

Richard Hammond describes his childhood and adolescence and the emergence of the adrenalin junkie, the first ridiculous stunts on his tricycle, and an increasing and near obsessive attraction to speed and the smell of petrol. If you could sum up On the Edge in three words, what would they be?

    personal, heartfelt, deep

What other book might you compare On the Edge to and why?

His other two books, although this one deals with the tragedy and road to recovery after his crash.

Have you listened to any of Richard Hammond and Mindy Hammond ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have read the 2nd and 3rd books and like them as well. On the Edge is for those who watched episode when the crash happened and wanted to know more about his real life experiences.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Tears and laughter. Listening to his stories fill a void that is missing by watching the Top Gear alone.

  • Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal

Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more (except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdalan) and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight.

Hope says: "A Worthy Book, indeed"
    "The testament with humor!"

Would you consider the audio edition of Lamb to be better than the print version?

    Narrator a bit slow.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lamb?

    Resurrect the lizards!

What aspect of Fisher Stevens’s performance would you have changed?

    Faster pace and more dramatic.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Biff loving Mary.

    Any additional comments?

If you ever get to me Moore you won't be able to stop reading his novels
