A young reporter on assignment from the San Francisco Observer... An older woman welcoming him into her magnificent family home that he has been sent to write about and that she must sell with some urgency... A chance encounter between two unlikely people... An idyllic night - shattered by horrific unimaginable violence, the young man inexplicably attacked - bitten - by a beast he cannot see in the rural darkness....

I have always been a fan or Anne Rice but this book was a huge let down.
A plot would have helped. It's much like a journal. Just giving the reader different things that happen to the writer. I managed to finish it somehow waiting on the plot or purpose to be reviled.
Maybe she was pushed by her publisher to get something written?

I have enjoyed many of her other books. She has made a good name of herself but that does not condone writing something and taking my hard earned money just because of who she is. She has gotten stale and lazy, riding out the fame of her name.... I am very disappointed.. don't waist a credit ..

Tragedy and mental illness have been dark companions of Rae Newborn for more than 50 years. Her life seems to start rebuilding itself, though, when she moves to a deserted island to restore the house her mysterious great-uncle built in the 1920s. But Rae senses powerful forces stirring on the island. Is the skin-crawling feeling she has of someone watching her only in her mind, or has something disturbingly real taken notice of Rae?

I really did try this book, The woman who is the star of the show is an older woman who has lost some family and wishes to commit suicide. I say let her, She is spoiled beyond anything, she seems to be bothered by people who do not know who she is due to her career in wood working. I suspect Mrs King,( no relation) must also be like this,, a " You should know and love me " attitude. I am rude to people who want to be friendly,..Im very very self centered. And every man loves me! oh poor me, my life is so hard, cry cry..
This kind of attitude bothers me greatly, I usually like me heros.
My suggestion is to overlook this book unless you to are spoiled and rich brat!

Victoria McQueen has an uncanny knack for finding things: a misplaced bracelet, a missing photograph, answers to unanswerable questions. When she rides her bicycle over the rickety old covered bridge in the woods near her house, she always emerges in the places she needs to be. Vic doesn't tell anyone about her unusual ability, because she knows no one will believe her. She has trouble understanding it herself.

    Unique and interesting,
I did not care for Kate Mulgrew, She gave them all a bit of a southern accent and I hate her man voice but the book is worth it.

What if—whoosh, right now, with no explanation—a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That’s what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened—not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children.

This was an interesting story. I found it hard to see it as the writer does. His story is a good story but I think if this happend things would be different. Not to say there is anything wrong with this way.
The story also has some uplifting moments. A laugh when not expected.
The ending was left hanging just a little for me. It would end a movie well. Just a couple loose ends. This is where the reader is asked to use thier own imagination.
I would recomend this book to my friends and family.

The Bartender' s Tale stars Tom Harry and his 12-year-old son, Rusty, who live alone and run a bar in a small Montana town in the early 1960s. Their lives are upended when Proxy, a woman from Tom's past, and her beatnik daughter, Francine, breeze into town. Is Francine, as Proxy claims, the unsuspected legacy of her and Tom’s past? Without a doubt she is an unsettling gust of the future, upending every certainty in Rusty’s life and generating a mist of passion and pretense that seems to obscure everyone’s vision but his own.

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

But the overdone details here are annoying. If I cared about the little things people do such as, tturning thier head to the left and right and nodding, I would not be a fiction fan. The story is ok. Interestine even. The "details" distract from it.
I also knew early what would happen in the end. Anybody who is a big reader of fiction should be able to do the same. Only a so so read.

Although it is somewhat far fetched it is a great story. Full of wonder and imagination.
A story I would give to my children.
I really liked the fact that the young man never gives up on life, a story about going on in the face of certain death.
I was not crazy about the readers accent, i found it annoying but i understand the need for it. Any fiction reader will enjoy this adventure. An instant classic.
