  • Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power

Rachel Maddow's Drift argues that we've drifted away from America's original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war, with all the financial and human costs that entails. Sensible yet provocative, dead serious yet seriously funny, Drift will reinvigorate a "loud and jangly" political debate about how, when, and where to apply America's strength and power - and who gets to make those decisions.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I recommend it to every American citizen, and everyone else who comes into contact with American foreign policy. We all need to understand what drives this country to war in order to fulfill the promises of peace.

What about Rachel Maddow’s performance did you like?

    She's Rachel Maddow! Duh!

    Any additional comments?

I have lived and worked in military communities as a member of the military family, and rarely do I encounter a civilian who really cares about understanding the untenable situation in which our government has put our military forces. If you care at all about how and why we go to war, and how that affects not only our military but American civilians as well, listen to this book and buy the paper version for reference. Forget the damn yellow ribbon magnets and buy this book instead!

Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

Gaiman wrote this story with Henry in mind, making this one of the best matches of book to voice. As a talented veteran actor, Henry nails every character and makes the story come alive. If you love hearing a good story told well, crank up the campfire and plug in. With or without s'mores, this audio experience will make any day a summer camp day!

Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

As the author makes clear in his afterward, this is THE BEST way to experience his writing, especially with such a talented cast of narrators. It's a fantastic book, but as an audiobook experience, it's a standout. If you are an audiophile, this is a must for your collection.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

What would have made The Night Circus better?

Actually including circus. I was hoping for creepy clowns, dark and scary carnival rides, strange characters and carnies. Instead, this book is blatantly riding the wizard-robe coattails of the Harry Potter series. Very boring story that goes nowhere. I was shocked to realize I had only listened to a couple hours -- felt more like a couple days of listening to a boring friend drone on about his lovelife.

What was most disappointing about Erin Morgenstern’s story?

    No circus elements, just "magic."

What didn’t you like about Jim Dale’s performance?

Jim Dale is ALWAYS BRILLIANT! Unfortunately for this book, he is also the voice for the Harry Potter books in America, so I was constantly reminded of the better book series.

What character would you cut from The Night Circus?

    The author of the book?

    Any additional comments?

Don't waste credits on this crap. Get Howl's Moving Castle if you want to read magic. Still looking for the circus book I want to read.
