Wealthy American widower Adam Verver and his daughter Maggie live in Europe, where they collect art and relish each other's company. Through the efforts of the manipulative Fanny Assingham, Maggie becomes engaged to Amerigo, an Italian prince in reduced circumstances, but remains blind to his rekindled affair with her longtime friend Charlotte Stant. Maggie and Amerigo marry, and later, after Charlotte and Adam have also wed, both spouses learn of the ongoing affair, though neither seeks a confrontation.

I had foraged my way through Portrait of a Lady by the same author, so I thought I could attempt this one. I just couldn't do it. He goes off on such tangents that have really nothing to do with the story line at hand, that I couldn't follow it at all. Flow Gibson is a great as the voice of the story, but the sound quality wasn't great. I will keep it in my library and maybe one day in the future I will have more patience.

This book was more of the same as the first, but it was worse. I endured it, and I am NOT going to finish the series.

The people were much more believable than most LDS novels I have read. Most characters are usually good or evil, but the people in this book were a mixture of both as normal people are. I really enjoyed this book and had trouble putting it down. I also LOVED that the story went all the way to the Salt Lake Valley instead of stopping when the rescuers arrived. I would definitely recommend this to others.

The New York Times best-selling Mrs. Murphy mysteries delight fans with an irresistible blend of suspense, engaging characters, and the entertaining high jinks of some quick-witted, four-legged friends. With more than two million copies in print, the series has made co-authors Rita Mae and Sneaky Pie Brown the most popular human/feline writing team in the world.

I felt that it was entertaining to listen to, but that it didn't stand out as anything special. After reading later books in the series I realize that this was the beginning of a downhill plunge.

The New York Times best-selling Mrs. Murphy mystery series is a favorite with cozy fans and cat lovers all over the world, and Sour Puss has all the red herrings and surprising plot twists fans adore. When world-renowned grape and fungus expert Professor Vincent Forland is decapitated in Crozet, Virginia, it looks like a political killing. Forland had recently lectured on how distilled fungus plays a critical role in chemical warfare.

I have been reading the Sneaky Pie Brown series for about 13 years now off and on and I have to say that the plot lines are getting thinner and thinner. I used to read them for a good mystery and to find out what was happening to my favorite characters. The storyline used to keep me on the edge of my seat, but now I just get them to find out about the main characters. The mystery is almost nonexistant. I felt no suspense whatsoever until the last couple of chapters and then I thought the killer's motives were lame and unconvincing. I am now wondering if I will go on with the series at all. If Ms. Brown wished to change the course of the series to a purely interpersonal novel, then she has many places she could go, but as far as mysteries go, she has hit a dead end.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

"Fantastic - but don't spoil it"
    Overall

I could not wait to listen to this book everyday on my work commute. It was recommended to me by a coworker and I loved it. The ending leaves you completely hanging, but that is okay because you just want more with the next book. I did look at the plot summary for the next two that audible has and that was NOT SMART! It gave away sooooo much! So trust me, you will want to continue the series, but don't spoil for yourself like I did. My husband thought it was sweet revenge though, because I spoiled Harry Potter 6 for him and said that Dumbledore died. Ah well!

  • Vanity Fair: A Novel Without a Hero

Generally considered to be his masterpiece, Vanity Fair is Thackeray's resplendent social satire that exposes the greed and corruption raging in England during the turmoil of the Napoleonic wars. Subtitled "A Novel Without a Hero", it traces the changing fortunes of two unforgettable women: the scheming opportunist Becky Sharp, one of literature's most resourceful, engaging, and amoral heroines, and her foil, the faithful, naive Amelia Sedley.

Charles says: "Superb Version --- Highly Recommended"
    "Not Bad"
    Overall

I really enjoyed the first three sections of the book, but when it came to section four, I could not understand what else the author would have to say about the story for 5 more hours. I thought 3 out of the last 5 hours of listening could have been cut completely out and the story would have been better for it. All in all, I am very glad I can say I finished it, and the story really is of merit, but I wished the end had not dragged on so.

Molly Gibson lost her mother when she was a child. Any stepmother would have been a shock, but the new Mrs Gibson is a self-absorbed, silly little widow, and Molly's unhappiness is compounded by the realisation that her father has come to regret his second marriage.

I will definitely be listeningto another work of this author. I chose it because I enjoyed the BBC drama production of it so much. I was really put at first because that the book is unfinished (the author died before writing the last chapter), but the narrative summing up the book by a magazine editor of the time was wonderful and very appropriate. I would say a much read if you enjoy Victorian novels and even if you don't.

Meanwhile, Adam Bede woos Dinah's cousin Hetty Sorrel. But she is distracted by the attentions of Captain Arthur Donnithorne. Erin K says: "Excellent Narration"
    "Not the right Narrator"
    Overall

I have listened to another version of this book before and adored it. I have also read Middlemarch and the Mill on the Floss and enjoyed them as well. David Case is not the right narrator for this book. His voice is to harsh and it just takes to much away from the tone of the actual writing. The other version I heard was a women and that just fits better. I did really like David Case's preformance in the Count of Monte Cristo, but that is an adventure novel and such a harsh, crisp voice is appropriate. All in all, get the book, just not this version.

    Overall

Even though you know how the end will turn out not very long into the story. I really enjoyed this book. The sound quality was very good. I always look forward to Flo Gibson narrating as well.
I loved that in the end of the story it is both of them that acknowlege they had a hand in not getting together sooner. I could really relate with the heroine throught the story, and it had some very entertaining and extreme characters, probably the most extreme out of all of Austen's novels.
This is something I will listen to over and over again.
