  • Holidays on Ice: Featuring Six New Stories

David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story. Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters ("Us and Them"); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French ("Jesus Shaves"); and what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm ("Let It Snow").

What made the experience of listening to Holidays on Ice the most enjoyable?

As always, David Sedaris is incredibly funny and, Mr. Sedaris, if you are reading this, I apologize. I love your writing so. I'd be your biggest fan but that's a pretty creepy appellation.

This collection, though, just didn't really flow. It was a collection of stories with only the mild theme of holidays. It gets a 4 overall because he is a really good author but, judged by comparing to his other books, it should get a 3.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Many of these stories were in his other books, to some extent that's expected, but not when it's such a significant amount of the book. Also, the long performance piece done by another voiceover actor should have been labelled "seriously unabridged" - it went on about twice as long as it ought.

When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously? Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown....

I didn't really like this book but I didn't hate it. Mostly the only issue I had is the writing style is... Let me see if I can explain this properly: when you read a lot of brain candy-type novels (lighthearted romance or fiction) you tend to skim them fairly quickly because for every 10 pages there is only one solid page of real information or character development.

These books (at least the first and second) bear those same marks. It's the written equivalent of a Darma (a la Darma and Greg) character - such a free spirit, but such a boring free spirit who can't speak very well. I might have enjoyed this book more if it were something I was reading and that I could skim. Fast forwarding isn't really the same thing.

The first book was great and so was this one. I should add that I am a SciFi & Fantasy fan, if you aren't, this might not initially appeal to you but I promise you'll get pulled in by the characters.

I cannot begin to tell you the disappointment I had when I realized the next one wouldn't be out for some time. If there's any complaint I have, it'd be that I can't hear more.

Growing up with telepathic abilities, Sookie Stackhouse realized early on there were things she'd rather not know. And now that she's an adult, she also realizes that some things that she knows about, she'd rather not see—like Eric Northman feeding off another woman. A younger one. There's a thing or two she'd like to say about that, but she has to keep quiet—Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town.

Would you listen to Deadlocked again? Why?

This person did a great imitation of the Sookie from TV. I had read the books, learned to almost like the television show (it's always hard to see characters you pictured in your head portrayed by someone else's imagination), and then decided the last in the series I'd listen to in audio format. It really didn't disappoint. The narrator did a great job and Charlaine Harris' books always leave me wanting to hear more.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I really liked the beginning of this series which I read in the old school, paper-bound form. I'm not totally sure if it's the book itself, the actor, or the bad translation from words to audio but I never even finished this book.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narrator has a good voice and was likely going for the verbal gritty equivalent of Film Noir but it ended up merely convincing me he had some serious lung problems. Every time he did this shaky breath-in thing in between lines, I wanted to scream, "Go see a Doctor, sir!"

    Any additional comments?

Unless desperate, I won't be listening to the rest of this series. I may buy the books, though.

Once again, David Sedaris brings together a collection of essays so uproariously funny and profoundly moving that his legions of fans will fall for him all over again. He tests the limits of love when Hugh lances a boil from his backside, and pushes the boundaries of laziness when, finding the water shut off in his house in Normandy, he looks to the water in a vase of fresh cut flowers to fill the coffee machine.

What did you love best about When You Are Engulfed in Flames?

I really enjoyed how this book flowed. Sometimes his collections of stories have a tendency to be just that: a collection of stories. This book flowed incredibly well and more than once made me laugh aloud.

  • Forged: Writing in the Name of God - Why the Bible's Authors Are Not Who We Think They Are

It is often said, even by critical scholars who should know better, that “writing in the name of another” was widely accepted in antiquity. But New York Times bestselling author Bart D. Ehrman dares to call it what it was: literary forgery, a practice that was as scandalous then as itis today. In Forged, Ehrman’s fresh and original research takes readers back to the ancient world, where forgeries were used as weapons by unknown authors to fend off attacks to their faith and establish their church.

What would have made Forged better?

I think I still judge a book by its cover, even if I order it online. I swear I bought this book because the cover was so pretty and the inside didn't live up to it. This man repeated words and phrases more than Dean Koontz; it was as if he had a two chapter idea he wanted to stretch into a full book. Shame on you, Mr. Ehrman. It was so bad, I actually got road rage from my audiobook.

Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. Why we think it’s a great listen: Gaiman’s not just an award-winning author, but a narrator who earns rave reviews – and fields requests from other authors to perform their books, too! Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead....

I love Neil Gaiman and this book didn't lessen that love. Very good story though the end left just a teensy bit to be desired. The reader was dead-on, too.

What The Daily Show is to evening news, The Colbert Report is to personality-driven pundit shows. Colbert brings his sarcastic charm to a half-hour report, tackling the important issues of the day and telling his guests why their opinions are just plain wrong. Stephen stands for "truthiness" and his American right to copyright that word and claim ownership of it. The author describes this as a simple audiobook from a simple mind: Stephen Colbert's.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Just not this book. It's probably more a coffee table book. It's not a good audiobook unless you have some attention deficit disorder.
