Absalom, Absalom! tells the story of Thomas Sutpen, the enigmatic stranger who came to Jefferson township in the early 1830s. With a French architect and a band of wild Haitians, he wrung a fabulous plantation out of the muddy bottoms of the north Mississippi wilderness.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Faulkner's language is so complex that it takes a little effort to digest the text. As always he is well worth the effort but the listener needs a slower text reader to really appreciate the complexity of Faulkners language.

Did Grover Gardner do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

yes he did. Just spoken a little fast for me

    Story

Set in the fictional South American country of Costaguana, Nostromo explores the volatile politics and crippling greed surrounding the San Tomé silver mine. The story of power, love, revolutions, loyalty and reward is told with richly evocative description and brilliantly realised characters. But Nostromo is more than an adventure story; it is also a profoundly dark moral fable. Its language is as compellingly resonant as the sea itself; the characters absorbing and complex.

Dan Harlow says: "If literature was food, this would be 12 courses"

Would you listen to Nostromo again? Why?

after re reading and listening to several years after my first encounter with Nostromo I can not recommend the book highly enough. It is compelling to listen to and read at the same time so as not to miss any of the language and structure of the book .

What did you like best about this story?

everything form the way of expressing the language to the gripping tale

What about Nigel Anthony’s performance did you like?

very good . The different expressions and accents were constantly good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The descriptions of the sea and the Isabels.

    Any additional comments?

a treat for anyone to read.

The first short-story collection in English by the acclaimed Chilean author Roberto Bolano. Winner of a 2005 PEN Translation Fund Award. "The melancholy folklore of exile," as Roberto Bolano once put it, pervades these 14 haunting stories. Bolano's narrators are usually writers grappling with private (and generally unlucky) quests, who typically speak in the first person, as if giving a deposition, like witnesses to a crime.

Where does Last Evenings on Earth rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The book was rather like listening to a lawyer or policeman giving evidence at a public hearing. I am glad I bought it although I can not say I enjoyed the experience . I am not a fan of Kafka who I was reminded of while listening to Last Evenings on Earth

What other book might you compare Last Evenings on Earth to and why?

Kafka, The Trial . Same style of writing .

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Left me neutral. No emotional response.

Having inspired a classic film and Broadway play, The Caine Mutiny is Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life—and mutiny—on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater. It was immediately embraced upon its original publication as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of the Second World War. In the intervening half century, this gripping story has become a perennial favorite, selling millions throughout the world, and claiming the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

    Excellent. gripping story and history

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Caine Mutiny?

The breaking of the cable towing the target. Poor old captain lost the plot

What does Kevin Pariseau bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    listening is very relaxing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

a real experience of life at sea
