Mississippi plantation mistress Amanda Satterfield loses her daughter to cholera after her husband refuses to treat her for what he considers to be a “slave disease.” Insane with grief, Amanda takes a newborn slave child as her own and names her Granada, much to the outrage of her husband and the amusement of their white neighbors. Troubled by his wife’s disturbing mental state and concerned about a mysterious plague sweeping through his slave population, Master Satterfield purchases Polly Shine, a slave reputed to be a healer.

Enjoyed this book very much, liked it because it had some history in it, how things were in the South when slavery was a way of life. Enjoyed the parts when slavery had ended to actually find out that it was still very difficult for the free slaves. Amazing what our country went through to get us where we are today. The reader was EXCELLENT!!

Read this book when it first came out many years ago, so this was like brand new to me I really didn't remember much of the story. I enjoyed it then, I loved it now, history, romance, mystery has it all. The characters are wonderful, I lived in the North for many years and now in the South for many years and I can tell you everyone tells a different story about the war depending on where you live - North or South. Just started Book 2 and it's just as good.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

    Story

Don't really know if I liked this book or not, story line was good, Amy is really an awful person but so is Nick, they DESERVE each other. Won't give away the ending but I didn't like it. It certainly keeps you guessing as to what is happening and what will happen next, but I just couldn't really get deep into it.

First, I'm really glad that I listened to this book, it took a while for me to get interested in it, there were parts that were at first boring & confusing to me but I stuck with it, and in the end glad that I did. In the beginning I had no idea where this story was going, why did we need all of this "boring" info, that's what I thought but you really do need it and then when the book is done you realize that it really wasn't boring. So in a nutshell I truly think it was a very enjoyable story, learned things that I never knew and actually never thought about, give it a try, stick with it, good book.

MJ - NC ...... A beautiful story, a lovely history lesson. Some parts are so sad when you hear how an ethnic group of people had to suffer in the early days. That's part of history that one doesn't hear of so often. Some of the characters were actually real people in our history made it even more exciting to hear about. I actually went onto the internet to then look them up and find out more about them. Enjoyed it so very much.

Just finished listening to it, and it's still playing out in my mind, what a beautifully written and spoken book, I enjoyed it so very much. The characters were so real, during a party one can hear the music and the laughter. You can feel the pain of the people when they hit hard times, and then the ending, I hated for it to end. It's a wonderful history lesson too, about war, hard times, shell shock, just the difference from then to now.
Read the book, or shall I say listen to the book, you will come away with a beautiful experience I promise you. MJ
