This read and informed me like a tenth grade history textbook. OK for dry, superficial coverage.
I don't need to add praise to this author's work. It is quite well done. It is not the best book on the Lincoln presidency I have ever read, in fact not that strong in that regard. But Goodwin does an interesting thing to seek out a pattern in Lincoln's behaviour and analyzing it. Well done!
One cannot say that one enjoys this book. It is a book of the destruction of very many lives, and disrespect of what many readers may hold dear. Reader beware. But it is well written and tells the story of a powerful man in world history.
This book is great fun! If you like history, which does not read like a textbook, but is filled with enough detail and context to draw you into a different world, this is one. Excellent. Mr Wallis is tallented.
An excellent book written by a trained story teller. He brings a novelists hand to a very broad story to be told. It is well done.
The author is almost always worth reading or listening to. This book is no exception. He really is passionate here as it is biographical.
Adolf Hitler and his government is difficult to address in literature, because there is content available in all media in excess and each person has deep and a lot of associations with the man and the era. This is a book written by a first hand witness, who can even comment on daily moods of the German leader. It is well researched too. Excellent and interesting page after page.
This whole series is well-balanced and researched. What more could be asked of a biographer. Oh yea, well written too!
The format chosen by Ms. James is loose reflection in diary style over the course of a year. It cannot be said to be an autobiography as the title does suggest. It is like having a conversation with PD, but too brief.
This is well researched and pretty well written. However, do you know when biographies start to read like fan mail? There are several moments in this book, when one begins to doubt that one is getting the real story. This book has this tendency. Rather than giving Bonhoeffer the benefit of the doubt, there are moments, when the author seems to be addressing his perceived critics of Bonhoeffer, rather than just telling the story. This weakness makes the biography difficult to read.
This history is worth reading / listening to for all who are fascinated by the personal effort and thought that goes into the best politics. Well written, well researched.
