Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey tells the story behind Highclere Castle, the real-life inspiration and setting for Julian Fellowes's Emmy Award-winning PBS series, and the life of one of its most famous inhabitants: Lady Almina, the fifth Countess of Carnarvon. Drawing on a rich store of materials from the archives of Highclere Castle, including diaries, letters, and photographs, the current Lady Carnarvon has written a transporting story of this fabled home on the brink of war.

Almost everybody who has grown up in Chicago knows about the Thorne Rooms. Housed in the Children’s Galleries of the Chicago Art Institute, they are a collection of 68 exquisitely crafted miniature rooms made in the 1930s by Mrs. James Ward Thorne. Each of the 68 rooms is designed in the style of a different historic period, and every detail is perfect, from the knobs on the doors to the candles in the candlesticks. Some might even say, the rooms are magic....

This work of fiction was a fun listen. I didn't know about the exhibit prior to listening. What a visionary Mrs. James Ward Thorne was. I would think it would not be possible to
recreate due to cost of labor. Marianne Marolne did an excellent writing and Cassandra Campbell's voice was appealing. I think Tweens would really enjoy it. So didI!

William Stoner is born at the end of the 19th century into a dirt-poor Missouri farming family. Sent to the state university to study agronomy, he instead falls in love with English literature and embraces a scholar's life, far different from the hardscrabble existence he has known. And yet as the years pass, Stoner encounters a succession of disappointments.

Loved the story. Mr. Stechschulte, you have a voice I throughly enjoyed but your Southern accent was less than stellar at times condescending to my Southern ears. Please don't ever do a Southern accent again. However, don't let this negative comment keep you from down loading the book. Mr. Stechschulte doesn't over use the accent and he really does have a pleasing natural voice.

If you could sum up The Faraway Horses in three words, what would they be?

    revealing, compelling, and fascinating

Who was your favorite character and why?

Buck, he is an honest man.

    Any additional comments?

First part was slow and a bit morose. But I understand why it needed to be there after listening to the complete book. Buck's childhood formed his relationships with the horses. He is a good friend to horses and people alike.
