Amazing Grace tells the story of the remarkable life of the British abolitionist William Wilberforce (1759-1833). This accessible biography chronicles Wilberforce's extraordinary role as a human rights activist, cultural reformer, and member of Parliament. At the center of this heroic life was a passionate 20-year fight to abolish the British slave trade, a battle Wilberforce won in 1807, as well as efforts to abolish slavery itself in the British colonies.

I've listened to several biographies in the past couple of years. I sometimes can't wait for the person to die so the book will be over. On this one I cried when Wilberforce died. I think this book is as good as Metaxas' book on Bonhoeffer.

From renowned scientist and animal welfare advocate Temple Grandin, this groundbreaking book is a clarion call to awareness of the inner lives of humankind's far-too-often mistreated and neglected companions. Based on research spanning over 30 years, these stunning insights into the very real emotions and thoughts of animals are sure to be a source of fascination and inspiration.

I've always had a bunch of dogs and have even raised 50 fancy laying hens and a few turkeys. I know quite a bit about animals, but I learned a lot from this book. Of course, I know my dogs would be happier if they weren't fenced in my yard that is about an acre, but they wouldn't last long on this road. I'd probably get sued by the bikers, too.

One of the most interesting things I learned is that MacDonalds and Wendys have brought about positive changes in the way cattle and chickens are processed.

If you enjoy living with animals and care about how animals are treated, I highly recommend this book.

For the first four months of 1942, U.S., Filipino, and Japanese soldiers fought what was America's first major land battle of World War II, the battle for the tiny Philippine peninsula of Bataan. It ended with the surrender of 76,000 Filipinos and Americans, the single largest defeat in American military history. The defeat, though, was only the beginning, as Michael and Elizabeth M. Norman make dramatically clear in this powerfully original book.

Owen Wister’s The Virginian pre-dates the classic novels of Zane Grey and Max Brand and is considered by many to be the original Western. Dedicated to Wister’s friend and fellow outdoorsman Theodore Roosevelt, this timeless tale almost single-handedly established the cowboy archetype in literature. A quiet, noble foreman of a Wyoming cattle ranch in the 1870s, the Virginian falls for pretty schoolteacher Molly Wood. But when a rival suitor challenges his honor, the Virginian struggles to make his beloved Molly understand the harsh justice of the West.

In the wild, when a wolf knows its time is over, when it knows it is of no more use to its pack, it may sometimes choose to slip away. Dying apart from its family, it stays proud and true to its nature. Humans aren’t so lucky. Luke Warren has spent his life researching wolves. He has written about them, studied their habits intensively, and even lived with them for extended periods of time.

The book switches from one person to another, each with a different narrator. I enjoyed that a lot. The story, especially the wolf facts, kept me interested. This is my second Jodi Picoult novel. Like the other one, it is family drama, a court room scene, and a secret being kept until the end.

The Passage of Power follows Lyndon Johnson through both the most frustrating and the most triumphant periods of his career - 1958 to 1964. It is a time that would see him trade the extraordinary power he had created for himself as Senate Majority Leader for what became the wretched powerlessness of a Vice President in an administration that disdained and distrusted him. Yet it was, as well, the time in which the presidency, the goal he had always pursued, would be thrust upon him in the moment it took an assassin’s bullet to reach its mark.

This is a lesson in how government works in addition to a history lesson. The part about the Kennedy assassination made me cry just like I did when it happened and I was only 15 years old. The part about the passage of the civil rights legislation has more tension in it than many suspense novels I've listened to.

We shouldn't expect our governmental leaders to be without fault. Johnson had many, but he was a great man.

Now I'll need to spend my credits for the next few months listening to the earlier volumes on Johnson.

A literary icon sometimes seen as a bridge between the Beat Generation and the hippies, Ken Kesey scored an unexpected hit with his first novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. His successful follow-up, Sometimes a Great Notion, was also transformed into a major motion picture, directed by and starring Paul Newman. Here, Oregon’s Stamper family does what it can to survive a bitter strike dividing their tiny logging community. And as tensions rise, delicate family bonds begin to fray and unravel.

I've listened to other novels that change from third person to first person, but this is the only one I've listened to that has more than one giving his first person account along with a third person account. The narrator is pretty good, but I do wish he had used different voices for the first person accounts. Sometimes it took a bit to realize which character was talking.

Here begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days, Second Manassas to Antietam, and Perryville in the fall of 1862, but so are the smaller and often equally important engagements on both land and sea: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, Monitor versus Merimac, and Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, to mention only a few.

I am into my second volume of The Civil War. I finally printed off from Wikipedia a list of the battles and generals. I may have to go back to the beginning. While Foote tells interesting sideline stories and gives physical descriptions of the important players, most of the book is about battles. I'm sorry, but I have a hard time keeping them all straight.

This isn't a casual book. If you want to learn all you can from it, it will demand your complete attention.
