"Excellent biography"
I've listened to several biographies in the past couple of years. I sometimes can't wait for the person to die so the book will be over. On this one I cried when Wilberforce died. I think this book is as good as Metaxas' book on Bonhoeffer.
"I learned a lot"
I've always had a bunch of dogs and have even raised 50 fancy laying hens and a few turkeys. I know quite a bit about animals, but I learned a lot from this book. Of course, I know my dogs would be happier if they weren't fenced in my yard that is about an acre, but they wouldn't last long on this road. I'd probably get sued by the bikers, too.
One of the most interesting things I learned is that MacDonalds and Wendys have brought about positive changes in the way cattle and chickens are processed.
If you enjoy living with animals and care about how animals are treated, I highly recommend this book.
"Awful bit of history read dispassionately"
This was a bit of history that I wasn't very familiar with. I appreciated the flat, dispassionate narration. I also liked hearing about Japanese military culture.
"Worst writing ever!"
I have listened to over 350 books, and this is the worst writing I've ever tried to endure. I often yelled, "Shut the ___ up!" at the recording and fast forwarded. Oates never uses one word when 6 will do. I will avoid her writings like the plague from now on.
"Really good book!"
I've been listening to some classics interspersed with other books recently. This one was available at a special low price so I picked it up. Boy, have I been surprised! It has a good story and the narration is one of the best I've heard.
"Very interesting"
The book switches from one person to another, each with a different narrator. I enjoyed that a lot. The story, especially the wolf facts, kept me interested. This is my second Jodi Picoult novel. Like the other one, it is family drama, a court room scene, and a secret being kept until the end.
"Don't know if I can finish it"
This just isn't a very good book. I've read lots of interesting books on WWII and lots of interesting biographies. This isn't one of them.
"Excellent!"
This is a lesson in how government works in addition to a history lesson. The part about the Kennedy assassination made me cry just like I did when it happened and I was only 15 years old. The part about the passage of the civil rights legislation has more tension in it than many suspense novels I've listened to.
We shouldn't expect our governmental leaders to be without fault. Johnson had many, but he was a great man.
Now I'll need to spend my credits for the next few months listening to the earlier volumes on Johnson.
"Turn off the TV and listen"
This is one of the books that I've turned off the TV to listen to. I have to multi-task because my mother didn't approve of "sitting around and reading." I got the dishes done, the floor swept, and the laundry done.
"Interesting narrative structure"
I've listened to other novels that change from third person to first person, but this is the only one I've listened to that has more than one giving his first person account along with a third person account. The narrator is pretty good, but I do wish he had used different voices for the first person accounts. Sometimes it took a bit to realize which character was talking.
"Important book dense with battle history"
I am into my second volume of The Civil War. I finally printed off from Wikipedia a list of the battles and generals. I may have to go back to the beginning. While Foote tells interesting sideline stories and gives physical descriptions of the important players, most of the book is about battles. I'm sorry, but I have a hard time keeping them all straight.
This isn't a casual book. If you want to learn all you can from it, it will demand your complete attention.
