Dexter is an acquired taste. He is, after all, a serial killer, and even as a killer of killers, it's not for everyone. It's also not a series to just jump into (it really helps to have an understanding of the characters and their thought processes). It also doesn't help to just watch the TV show, since the books have their own storyline (and since several characters from the TV are dead in the books, and some that are dead in the TV show are alive in the books). But if you liked the previous Dexter books, you will LOVE this one.
He knows his character, and as he is reading the thought process that Dexter has, you really believe that it is Dexter himself telling you his story, not just the author reading the book.
Well worth it!
The characters are despicable, with very few redeeming qualities. Those who are prudish should stay away. Those looking for redemption won't find it here. The story is pedestrian, for the most part. It is easy to see where the story is headed, and the journey to get there is not as interesting as it started out. Please do not misunderstand me--Gillian Flynn is a great writer. This is not a critique of her writing quality or style. The journey and the destination made me reconsider whether it was worth the listen. Listen to the second book, also filled with despicable characters, but a far better journey and destination.
I have not listened to any of Ann Marie Lee's other performances, but she was fantastic in this audio book. Great job with tone and pacing, giving a distinct voice to the characters.
When we are introduced to the main character's "issue", which I will not disclose here. It is very well done, as well as continued references throughout. I just didn't care for the plot.
It is well written. There are no real curveballs in character traits or movement--all believable. Just for me, not worth the time investment. If you like dark, disturbing stories with little redemption and despicable characters, you may like it. Otherwise, check out her other books.
