When Marissa is found brutally murdered, with her young daughter, Haley, resting her head on her mother's bloody breast, she sends the idyllic California town of Oak Knoll into a tailspin. Already on edge with the upcoming trial of the See- No-Evil killer, residents are shocked by reports of the crime scene, which might not have been discovered for days had it not been for a chilling 911 call: a small child's voice saying, "My daddy hurt my mommy."

I've listened to the first two books in this series, and I'll continue with the next. Sometimes it's a bit gruesome, but that's murder. Even after only two books, I've gotten attached to the characters, especially Ann's best friend Franny. He's a hoot!

Give the first book a try - "Deeper than the Dead" - and maybe you'll be hooked on the series like me!

Maggy Thorsen is back! When the coffeehouse owner is dragooned into emceeing the barista competition (think Iron Chef, but with coffee) at the industry's scaldingly competitive trade show, she fears nothing good will come of it. Sure enough, the morning of the finals, Maggy discovers the body of her chief rival and conference organizer, Marvin LaRoche, under the trophy table.

Another series that fills in the time while driving or doing boring stuff at work. Really very enjoyable and entertaining, but not great literature. I rate a listen a 4 if I intend on listening to more in the series. It will never make a 5 though.

This is good enough that I've got the rest of the series in my Wishlist. I love a good literary read, but when at work or driving this is the kind of listen that suits me best. It doesn't take too much concentration but fills my otherwise boring time with enjoyment.

It has been years since Casey Maldonado visited her hometown, and the only reason she’s returning now is to get her brother, Ricky, out of jail, where he sits after being arrested for the brutal murder of Alicia McManus, his girlfriend of several months. Casey believes in her brother’s innocence, but proving that to the cops is a different matter altogether - especially since she has her own murder warrant to worry about. Perhaps even more frightening than the law is Casey’s confrontation with her personal demons....

I hope this isn't the last of the series. Although Death seems to be to-ing and fro-ing with Casey, I don't want Death to go away!

This isn't great literature, but it is a thoroughly enjoyable read and something out of the ordinary.

I really enjoyed this book and the premise is original. However, in my opinion, they went a little overboard with the lesbian theme. That said, I would read a sequel, if there is one, because the story is entertaining.

England, 1959. Laurel Nicolson is 16 years old, dreaming alone in her childhood tree house during a family celebration at their home, Green Acres Farm. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and then observes her mother, Dorothy, speaking to him. And then she witnesses a crime. Fifty years later, Laurel is a successful and well-regarded actress, living in London. She returns to Green Acres for Dorothy’s ninetieth birthday and finds herself overwhelmed by memories and questions she has not thought about for decades.

Once again, Kate Morton comes up with a treasure. She weaves the story from war time past to present, with all the intricate layers of love, loss, betrayal, passion, and leaves the listener wanting more. A sensitive portrayal of how people lived their lives even while a war was going on around them. There was an unexpected (as least to me) twist toward the end that surprised me by making the story even better.

Definitely worth a read or a listen! Kate Morton is an amazing author, and Caroline Lee did a lovely performance.

There isn't much fun in the sun when a billionaire real estate tycoon is found murdered on the Tilt-a-Whirl at a seedy seaside amusement park in the otherwise quiet summer tourist town of Sea Haven. John Ceepak, a former MP just back from Iraq, has just joined the Sea Haven police department. The job offer came from an old Army buddy who hoped to give Ceepak at least a summer's worth of rest and relaxation to help him forget the horrors of war. Instead, Ceepak will head up the murder investigation.

ENTERTAINING! Thoroughly enjoyed this book and the narrator was great! Nothing much new in the way of murder mysteries; but the tone, writing, and narration made it it's own.

Meet Jack Irish: criminal lawyer, debt collector, football lover, turf watcher, trainee cabinetmaker, and the best Australian crime character we've seen in years. When Jack receives a puzzling message from a jailed ex-client, he's too deep in misery over Fitzroy's latest loss to take much notice. Next thing Jack knows, the ex-client's dead and he's been drawn into a life-threatening investigation involving high-level corruption, dark sexual secrets, shonky property deals, and murder.

Harry is out of his depth. Detective Harry Hole is meant to keep out of trouble. A young Norwegian girl taking a gap year in Sydney has been murdered, and Harry has been sent to Australia to assist in any way he can. He's not supposed to get too involved. When the team unearths a string of unsolved murders and disappearances, nothing will stop Harry from finding out the truth. The hunt for a serial killer is on, but the murderer will talk only to Harry. He might just be the next victim.

To me, this book had a lot of unnecessary tangents. If I had been reading this book instead of listening to it, I would have skim-read several parts just to get back to the story.

I read another review that said this was the first in the series, and subsequent books are better. I'll probably give Harry Hole another chance.

The narrator was good sometimes but almost put me to sleep other times.
