  • The Janson Directive

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By Robert Ludlum
    • Narrated By Paul Michael
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Peter Novak, one of the world's greatest men, has been kidnapped! Running out of time and hope, Novak's people turn to Paul Janson, legendary covert operative and assassin. Janson is retired, and nothing could lure him back - nothing except Peter Novak, who once saved Janson's life. "Ludlum's best since The Bourne Identity," raves Kirkus Reviews.

This is one of the best I've listened to in a long while. I burn CD's to listen in my car going wherever. I found myself anxious to get in the car so I could listen to more. I guess this is the equivalent to a book you can't put down. Very well written to keep attention...very exciting. Only complaint was an occasional excursion into explaining how items used in the adventure worked. Some were tedious.

  • The Persimmon Tree

    • UNABRIDGED (27 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Bryce Courtenay
    • Narrated By Humphrey Bower
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

The Persimmon Tree opens in Indonesia in 1942 on the cusp of Japanese invasion and the evacuation of Batavia (Jakarta) by the Dutch. Seventeen-year-old Nicholas Duncan is on holiday there, in pursuit of an exotic butterfly known as the Magpie Crow. It's an uncertain, dangerous time to be in Indonesia, and Nick's options of getting out are fast dwindling. Amidst the fear and chaos he falls in love with Anna, the beautiful daughter of a Dutch acquaintance, and she nicknames him 'Mr Butterfly'.

    Corinne says: "An excellent sequel"
"Bryce Courtenay has yet to disappoint"

I've now read three of Courtenay's novels and found them all extremely interesting Novels (Power of One and Brother Fish are the other two). I will most likely go through all of his novels. An added benefit is the fact that they are read (so far) by Humphrey Bower who I find to be one of the best. I often search for novels he narrates for that very reason.

  • Shantaram

    • UNABRIDGED (43 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Gregory David Roberts
    • Narrated By Humphrey Bower

This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher; and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets.

Jamie says: "Do Not Miss This"
"One of the best reads yet"

I loved this book. I found it rich in both characters and location. Rarely did I find myself feeling the story should be moving faster or wondering why the author wandered to any of the many locations in the main character's life.
Also I have to say the narrator (Bower) was just outstanding. As anyone who listens to audiobooks knows, the narrator makes the experience of listening to a book and this man is one of the best I have heard. I am now looking for more books, searching by him as narrator.

France says: "Secret Life of Bees"
    "One of the best"

In short this book took me on a journey back in time. I grew up in the south in a small Alabama town during the period covered by this book surrounded by many of the characters. The characters were amazing and the reader by far one of the best I have ever heard. Do yourself a favor and download this audiobook.
