Sam, Bonzi, Lola, Mbongo, Jelani, and Makena are no ordinary apes. These bonobos know American Sign Language. Isabel Duncan, a scientist at the Great Ape Language Lab, doesn’t understand people, but animals she gets—especially the bonobos. Isabel feels more comfortable in their world than she’s ever felt among humans...until she meets John Thigpen, a very married reporter who braves the ever-present animal rights protesters outside the lab to see what’s really going on inside.

Having listened to and loving Sara Gruen's "Water for Elephants" I was excited to listen to "Ape House". Alas, it was just OK for me. I was not drawn in to the story as I was in WfE. The ending left me feeling like there should have been more to it. If you haven't listened to Water for Elephants you might like this one more than I did.

Dancing at the Rascal Fair by National Book Award nominee Ivan Doig captures the passion and tenacity of turn-of-the-century immigrants struggling to build new lives amidst Montana’s windswept Rockies. The tale unfolds into a contest of the heart between Anna Ramsay and Angus McCaskill—kept apart by obligations—as they and their stormy kin vie to tame the brutal land.

What did you love best about Dancing at the Rascal Fair?

The author had a wonderful way of painting word pictures. Phrasing was delightful. It drew me into the story.

What other book might you compare Dancing at the Rascal Fair to and why?

I haven't read a book I could compare to it. I really felt like this could have been a true story. Like I was listening to a real person talk about his life.

Have you listened to any of Robert Ian MacKenzie???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Haven't listened to Mr. MacKenzie before. His delivery seems rather slow at first, but as the story progresses it becomes endearing. Good character delivery.

If you could rename Dancing at the Rascal Fair, what would you call it?

Couldn't think of a better name for it.

    Any additional comments?

Really like listening to history through the eyes of an actual person. Loved it.

History has all but forgotten.... In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown. Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next best-selling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write. But then she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction....

Where does The Winter Sea rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

One of the best books I've listened to so far.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character in this book is Colonel Graham. I'd like him to be on my side like he was on Sophia's.

Which character ??? as performed by Rosalyn Landor ??? was your favorite?

I liked Rosalyn's performance of Jimmy most of all. I got a great mental picture of him.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I cried towards the end....don't want to give anything away.

    Any additional comments?

Great listen. Loved it. Hated to have it end. I'll listen to it again. Love the narration. Made me want to check into my ancestry.

At last, one of the world’s greatest works of science fiction is available - just as author Stanislaw Lem intended it. To mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of Solaris, Audible, in cooperation with the Lem Estate, has commissioned a brand-new translation - complete for the first time, and the first ever directly from the original Polish to English. Beautifully narrated by Alessandro Juliani (Battlestar Galactica), Lem’s provocative novel comes alive for a new generation.

Alessandro Juliani did an awesome job as narrator of this story. That being said, my impression of this book is that there were long periods of boredom sprinkled with some mildly interesting bits and ending with more boredom. I listened to the whole book hoping it would have a point. If it did, I missed it.

A frank, funny, no-holds-barred memoir that reveals the Deal or No Deal host’s ongoing struggle with OCD and ADHD–and how it has shaped his life and career.

Howie Mandel is one of the most recognizable names in entertainment–respected by his peers and beloved by audiences as the host of the enormously popular prime-time game show Deal or No Deal. With a career that spans three decades and many different show-business platforms–he’s a renowned stand-up comedian who continues to perform more than 150 sold-out shows a year, he created the award-winning TV show Bobby’s World, he’s starred in feature films and the hit TV series St. Elsewhere, and he’s also hosted his own daytime talk show–he’s one of the most versatile performers anywhere. But there are aspects of his personal and professional life he’s never talked about publicly–until now.

Eleven years ago, Mandel first told the world about his “germophobia.” He’s recently started discussing his adult ADHD as well. Now, for the first time, he reveals the details of his struggle with these challenging disorders. He catalogs his numerous fears and neuroses and shares entertaining stories about how he has tried to integrate them into his act. “If I’m making myself laugh,” he writes, “then I’m distracted from all the other things going on in my head that are, at times, torturous.” And he speaks frankly and honestly about the ways his condition has affected his personal life–as a son, husband, and father of three.

Fans who’ve been dying to know “the deal” behind Mandel’s remarkable rise through the show-business ranks will be rewarded with many never-before-told anecdotes, each one generously leavened with Mandel’s trademark humor. There are tales from every phase of his colorful career–from his early days ...

This book is narrated by Howie Mandel himself and sounding more like he's sitting in front of you having a conversation. It gave me some insight into what goes on in the mind of someone with OCD. I am impressed that Howie has done so well considering the hurdles he's had to deal with. You will be too.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Kathryn Stockett has done an amazing job. I was drawn into the story by her excellent descriptions and captivated by the powerful characters in this story. The narration is amazing also. I could actually "see" the story unfold as I listened. I loved it.

The dusty files of a venerable dictionary publisher, a hidden cache of coded clues, a story written by a phantom author, an unsolved murder in a gritty urban park: all collide memorably in Emily Arsenault's magnificent debut, at once a teasing literary puzzle, an ingenious suspense novel, and an exploration of definitions: of words, of who we are, and of the stories we choose to define us.

Ed says: "Enjoyable Book with Great Characters"
    "Boring"
    Overall

The premise was good, but the story, narration, and characters never delivered. I found it boring. I listened to the entire book hoping it would go somewhere, anywhere, but it didn't. Probably would make a good bedtime story...don't listen while you're driving.

I am very disappointed in the abridged version of this book. The editing is nothing more than a hack job. The heart and soul have been ripped out of it. I am desperate to find the unabridged version narrated by Davina Porter. I agree with others who don't like the narration. I cannot even listen to the rest of it.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

He's Hollywood's most dazzling star, who is worshiped by millions and hated by one twisted soul. His existence is under siege as a series of terrifying, enigmatic "messages" breaches the security systems of his Bel Air estate. The boxes arrive mysteriously, one by one, at Channing Manheim's compound. Manheim's security chief, ex-cop Ethan Truman, is used to looking beneath the surface of things. But until he entered the orbit of a Hollywood icon, he had no idea just how slippery reality could be.

This was my first listen from Audible. My husband and I both agree that Koontz is overly wordy but paints a good mental picture. The story line was interesting if not weird at times and the characters were well portrayed. The end was definitely too long and weird. The reader is great! I'll definitely look for more books read by him.
