  • Cloud of Sparrows

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 19 mins)
    • By Takashi Matsuoka
    • Narrated By Grover Gardner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In 1861, foreign ships have forced open Japan's doors to the West. Missionaries have come to Japan; they are there to save men's souls, but to the Japanese they are there to spread false religion. The young Lord Genji, who possesses the power of prophecy, flees to the Cloud of Sparrows castle, where he shelters two American missionaries. Together with a legendary swordsman and an enigmatic geisha, they embark on a harrowing journey through a dangerous landscape to prepare for a final battle.

    Barry says: "The Quintessential Novel"
    "Cloud of Sparrows"

an enjoyable story. captivating characters. i found the end to be a little weak but my real disappointment was the westernization of japanes words, especially "samurai". that really made the japanese characters unbelievable. it would have been great if only the western characters pronounced it that way. but, the story is imaginative and entertaining and i look foward to his next book.

  • Shogun: A Novel of Japan

    • UNABRIDGED (48 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By James Clavell
    • Narrated By David Case
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A bold English adventuer. An invincible Japanese warlord. A beautiful woman torn between two ways of life, two ways of love....An English captain and his crew are shipwrecked on the coast of feudal Japan. They must deal with two Japanese warlords who are struggling to attain the title of Shogun - and the ultimate power that comes with it.

Lorrie says: "A question about further Clavell books."

this would have rated a 5 if the publishers used someone who could pronounce japanese words as they should be. even if i don't speak the language, the readers mispronuciations made it difficult to enjoy the story.

  • Lottery

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Patricia Wood
    • Narrated By Paul Michael
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Perry's IQ is only 76, but he's not stupid. His grandmother taught him everything he needs to know to survive: she taught him to write things down so he won't forget them. She taught him to play the lottery every week. And, most important, she taught him whom to trust. When Gram dies, Perry is left orphaned and bereft at the age of 31. Then his weekly Washington State Lottery ticket wins him 12 million dollars, and he finds he has more family than he knows what to do with.

    Lyman says: "lottery"

very enjoyable and insightful. it'll also make you think about what is really important to make anyone happy. one of the best books released in a long time.

  • A Short History of Nearly Everything

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Bill Bryson
    • Narrated By Richard Matthews
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Corby says: "Very informative, fun to listen to"
"A short History of Nearly Everything"

save your credits....boring. i listened to part 1, hoping things would improve but after listening to the begining of part 2, i surrender. what a waste of 2 credits.

  • Pegasus Descending

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs)
    • By James Lee Burke
    • Narrated By Will Patton
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A troubled young woman breezes into Detective Robicheaux's hometown of New Iberia, Louisiana. She happens to be the daughter of his friend: a friend he witnessed gunned down in a bank robbery, a tragedy that forever changed Robicheaux's life.

    Deborah says: "Breathtaking"
    "Pegasus Descending"

i purchased this after seeing the 5 star ratings. i was very disappointed as the story is simplistic and is easy to stop listening to. it would be nice if audible would also have a composite score, say rating multiplied by number of raters or something similar.

  • The Camel Club

    • ABRIDGED (5 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By David Baldacci
    • Narrated By James Naughton

It exists at the fringes of Washington, D.C., has no power, and consists solely of four eccentric and downtrodden members whom society has forgotten. Their simple goal is to find the "truth" behind their country's actions.

    Lyman says: "the camel club"
    "the camel club"

it's amazing that the synopsis of the book is so different from the actual's like the person never read (or listened to) the book.
the story is ok and and has some nice twists but is not in the "can't stop listening" category.

  • The Hot Kid

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Elmore Leonard
    • Narrated By Arliss Howard
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Carl Webster, the hot kid of the marshals service, is polite, respects his elders, and can shoot a man driving away in an Essex at 400 yards. Carl works out of the Tulsa, Oklahoma, federal courthouse during the 1930s, the period of America's most notorious bank robbers: Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson...those guys.

    S. Casazza says: "A great book, an even better listen"
    "The Hot Kid"

Save your money. It's so bad, I can't even finish it. The reader ruins it for me. He is boring and doen't make the characters come alive. It started off well but.....

  • Black Wind

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 54 mins)
    • By Clive Cussler, Dirk Cussler
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

In the waning days of World War II, the Japanese tried a last desperate measure, a different kind of kamikaze mission, this one carried out by two submarines bound for the west coast of the United States, their cargo a revolutionary new strain of deadly virus.

Daniel says: "Ya Gotta Love Him"
    "Black Wind"

Two stars is being generous. Cussler is too predictable. I used to enjoy his books but it is "same ole, same ole". Scott Brick as a reader doesn't help. He is a reader, not a performer. He sounds the same no matter what the book is. I bought this book in spite of him and ended up disappointed. No more Cussler and no more Brick. Save your money.
