engaging, delightful, brilliant
It was a breathe of fresh air. I am now a huge fan of Kevin T Collins narration and the Liaden Universe. I have read the the books as Audible as listed them and have been fascinated by the universe, the characters and absolutely loved the narration.
Every characters voice is remembered perfectly, I felt he had a extremely strong attention to detail. As a vision impaired person who cannot read paper books and even struggles with a Kindle or iPad on maximum font settings I rely on audio books for my only access point into this great universe. At first I found the pacing quite rapid, but it took maybe 10 minutes to adjust, as it does when starting any new series and I was immediately captivated and held engaged the entire time.
I was impressed by scenes that involved multiple people and how smoothly he switched voices. Fantastic.
Lets just say there where nights I only got 2 or 3 hours sleep because I couldn't stop listening. Normally if I do this with a book I find I fall asleep, but this never happened with these books.
Cannot wait for the Trade Secrets book to be put on Audible which is the sequel to this one (Balance of Trade). Hope Kevin T Collins is able to read it again!
This book started great. Like really great. It was all action, interesting concepts about what it would be like to surf the Internet with your mind, and have ESP to boot. To be on the run, and confused about what was going on. As the hero figures things out, so do we.
Then suddenly, it's a really cliche romance novel.
I put up with that to see what happened, the romance angle wasn't TOO bad, pretty cringey and totally slowed the pace right down, but not awful.
Then the book wrapped up with about 15 different twists all of which where obvious as soon as the preceding one or two where revealed. And there was like two whole chapters where the heroes and villain explaining in great monologues exactly every little supposed detail of how they double and trip guess each other.
Oh the villain is supposed to be a chess genius - it didn't come across as plausible at ALL.
Then it was wrapped up into the neatest most perfect gushy bow ever.
The genre shifts are just so jarring, and the ending was just so rosy it was painful.
Narration was good, premise was excellent, started well. A great shame.
This book has everything from a typical 'coming of age' fantasy novel. Light vs Dark, Evil Overlord, Naive Hero, Snotty Noble Lady, Warrior Queen, Prophecies etc.
Don't. Let. That. Turn. You. Off.
The first 1/4 of the book is quite slow burning as it introduces all the characters. At first they all seem shallow and two dimensional and I spent a lot of time rolling my eyes at all the the people telling the hero how he was the ONLY one who could save the world etc.
Then it starts to pick up. We start to see darker elements like rape and torture (some quite graphic though in my opinion tastefully done, it never felt over the top for me).
By the time I got to the end of the book I was desperate to know what happened, I was very invested and really enjoying myself. For all the stereotypes that happen here, the characters become more detailed and interesting by the end.
It also does a bit of foreshadowing with various visions that have to be fulfilled. Essentially in each major story event, we the reader get a glimpse of part of a final scene. We are left wondering how they are going to get out of this one, or how that scene could possible come true with the fact we know our hero has to save the world. Then we see all the pieces fit together and you go 'Aha! So that's what that meant!"
This is not a Y.A book even though it might start off like one. At points it channels Robert Jordan a little too hard in the "Ooo stupid men!" from the women and vice versa but this is quickly forgotten as our party members begin to trust each other and save each other from various situations.
I'll be looking for the sequel for sure. Pleasantly surprised.
Yes, just a good fun read. It is nice to see someone with a 'super power' that has serious draw backs, where the small details and details are considered.
Matt was the most developed, I look forward to hearing the others if the sequel comes to Audible!
I pretty much did. Until it reached 5am and I just had to go to sleep. Finished it today though!
Highly recommended, I hope more of Michael's books come to Audible so I can listen to them all. I am interested to see if the characters in both his different series 'feel the same' or if they really do feel separate.
Yes. I hope the next two book are as good.
Fantastic narrator. Very very impressed. I especially enjoyed his pacing - some narrators are slightly too slow or too fast. He gives the main characters thought processes a decisive and methodical approach which reflected the main character well.
Excellent action but WITHOUT loads of gore and shock and awe. Sometimes I felt the main character was a little too crazy awesome, but every time I started to think this, a vulnerability to his character would appear. Cannot wait for the next two books - already pre-ordered both!
This was the best narration, with sooo many distinct voices that stayed perfect throughout all three books. I love Monster Hunter series but this is leaps and bounds above those books, totally out of the ballpark by comparison.
The premise had me a bit iffy, but I've fallen in love with it and hope there is another trilogy in the same universe, maybe some prequels or something.
The pacing was excellent, the characters where well detailed, in appearance and how they felt about things as well as their thoughts. The whole way through you are never sure who is going to make it through an encounter - it didn't feel predictable.
Kruger, unsure of spelling as its an audiobook!
His voices, how he remembered and kept them for every book in the Series. Very impressed.
I laughed in quite a few scenes. No tears, there isn't a lot of grief in these books, more determination to survive.
