"Instantly LIkeable"
Book starts out running and keeps on going. The main character, Joe Ledger is instantly likeable and the narration is top notch, putting Ray Porter as one of those few narrators that I'd follow to other genres.
Main character Joe Ledger is interchangeable with most action thriller lead men, John Corey, Sean Drummond, Cliff Janeway. Genre mixes up Thriller with Horror as Zombies are the main threat, though everything is explained away medically, no supernatural elements. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
"Entertaining, but not satisfying."
I was torn on whether or not to use up a credit on this book, but got caught up in the hype of the forthcoming film despite reviews warning me that it's not even the full book...
It feels, very very short at only 6 hours in length, and while the performances are excellent and it's nice to have multiple narrators - the book falls flat on any real cohesive story, probably because only some of them were put into audio form (I've never read the print book).
Wait until they do the full book, which is supposedly forthcoming (if not already out, I haven't checked recently)...
"Feh. Chicks book."
I've read a lot of Nelson DeMilles work and loved most of it. And sure at 20+ hours long you get you a lot of book for your money, but I found the whole thing frustrating more than anything.
The characters proceed on a clearly self destructive path that anyone else would simply step off, and it gets tiresome to see them make the same mistakes over and over again. I especially hate it when DeMille does these self congratulatory introductions to the books, this one is particularly nauseating. Save it for the end so we can see for ourselves if the book is a modern classic or not...
No way I'll try the sequel, lost enough of my life listening to this one...
"Unnecessary"
If you've already read PATIENT ZERO then you don't need this.
If you haven't read PATIENT ZERO, this very very slightly helps kick start things, but 90% of what you hear on this 19 minute mini story, gets repeated later in the main novel anyway.
While not bad, it's just way too short, and way to much of what you get in the main book anyway.
"Just plain great - couldn't get enough."
First prose book I'd tried of Swierczynski and first time I'd heard Pete Larkin do a reading. Both were spectacular. Larkins up there with Scott Brick for favorite reader. I enjoy Nelson DeMille, Jeffrey Deaver and Brian Haig and Fun and Games ranks right up there as one my favorites.
Enjoyed it so much I'm going to go out and buy a print copy so I can lend it to friends. You'll be glad you picked this book, Swierczynski delivers!
"ABRIDGED - skip it"
Stupid me. I didn't notice that it was an abridged edition. Voice's are fine, background music was an interesting touch - but holy cow does the story jump around like crazy. Abridged=bad. Avoid it if you can, it's like reading part of a novel - you will not feel satisfied when you finish it since you can tell so much is left out.
"Brian Haig is teriffic"
I love me some Scott Drummond and was disappointed to see that his newest novel was not on Drummond - but bought it anyway!
The mixed reviews made me hesitate, but I'm glad I got it. It was a terrific audio book as I kept making reasons to drive somewhere to listen some more.
If you like Haig's other work - you're sure to enjoy this as well.
