Although Stoker did not invent the vampire, the novel's influence on the popularity of vampires has been singularly responsible for many theatrical, film and television interpretations since its publication. Required listening for any fan of the genre!

Just finished this classic for the first time. Though I couldn't get Keanu Reeves out of my mind while visualizing the character I found the book to be very well written but a little tedious at times. This book would have been much better had my mind not been so tainted by all the vampire crap we've grown up with especially of late.

In this Hugo-nominated novel, an alien walks into a museum and asks if he can see a paleontologist. But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). Landing at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the spacefarer, Hollus, asks to compare notes on mass extinctions with resident dino-scientist Thomas Jericho.

Aliens convincing scientists that god really exists. Very predictable and very sad, I couldn't imagine telling my son that I was dying. I really didn't care for the book but it did get me thinking about religion and my own personal beliefs from a different perspective.

In that first volume, we were introduced to the remarkable world of Roshar, a world both alien and magical, where gigantic hurricane-like storms scour the surface every few days and life has adapted accordingly. Roshar is shared by humans and the enigmatic, humanoid Parshendi, with whom they are at war.

How long must we now wait for book three? I love this story and the direction he has taken all of the characters, you will not be disappointed. And in my mind all fantasy books should be narrated by Kramer and Reading so no complaints there.. I know you're working on the sequel to Steelheart, Alloy of Law, Legion, and who knows what else Brandon but please don't leave us waiting too long.

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching portrait of the bloody price of power, The Son is an utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American West through the lives of the McCulloughs, an ambitious family as resilient and dangerous as the land they claim. Spring, 1849: Eli McCullough is 13 years old when a marauding band of Comanches takes him captive. Brave and clever, Eli quickly adapts to life among the Comanches, learning their ways and waging war against their enemies, including white men - which complicates his sense of loyalty and understanding of who he is.

The year is 1924 and the race to summit the world's highest mountain has been brought to a terrified pause by the shocking disappearance of George Mallory and Sandy Irvine, high on the shoulder of Mt. Everest. By the following year, three climbers - a British poet and veteran of the Great War, a young French Chamonix guide, and an idealistic young American - find a way to take their shot at the top.

This was my first book by Dan Simmons and I must say I was impressed. But if you don't know much about hiking, mountain climbing, or the history of Mount Everest then this book is not for you. I could not stop listening to this story and I was very surprised with the direction it went towards the end. Jacob can be a bit annoying at times but I got over it. Definitely one of the best books I've heard all year.

Now at last Keith Richards pauses to tell his story in the most anticipated autobiography in decades. And what a story! Listening obsessively to Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters records in a coldwater flat with Mick Jagger and Brian Jones, building a sound and a band out of music they loved. Finding fame and success as a bad-boy band, only to find themselves challenged by authorities everywhere....

I can't believe I finished this series. My instinct told me to stop a few books back but I kept on going. Butcher spends so much time describing how the characters feel and why that I actually forget what was about to happen in the first place. I only wish the series flowed at a faster pace. Not to knock Jim Butcher because he is an excellent writer but he's not for everyone. Give the first book a try before you let my opinion persuade you.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

Some of these characters were just plain evil, evil to the core. King is really good at portraying evil hidden behind religion which has always been a fire starter within me. I'm sure that's what the writer was after though. Good book, can't wait to see the mini series this summer.

Prince Gaborn, the Earth King, has defeated the forces arrayed against him each time before: the magical and human forces marshaled by Raj Ahten, who seeks immortality at any cost and has given up his humanity in trade; and the inhuman, innumerable, insectile hordes of the giant Reavers from under the Earth, whose unknowable motives are inimical to human life.

I was pleasantly surprised by this series of books and would highly recommend them to anyone who is a fan of good fantasy. My only problem with the story is that it takes place in just over a week yet vast distances are traveled by armies. Other than that I was really swept away in this adventure and feel as though I know these characters very well.
