  • The Big Over Easy: A Nursery Crime

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Jasper Fforde
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

It's Easter in Reading, a bad time for eggs, and no one can remember the last sunny day. Ovoid D-class nursery celebrity Humpty Stuyvesant Van Dumpty III, minor baronet, ex-convict, and former millionaire philanthropist, is found shattered to death beneath a wall in a shabby area of town. All the evidence points to his ex-wife, who has conveniently shot herself.

    Bruce Sabin says: "Total Whimsy"

I thought this was a delightful listen all the way through. I realize that it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you have a taste for the absurd you should try it. Tuesday Next is one of my favorite series and the Nursery Crimes are just as fun. I eagerly await "The Fourth Bear" which will come out next summer. The narrator was perfect.

  • Dog on It: A Chet and Bernie Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 40 mins)
    • By Spencer Quinn
    • Narrated By Jim Frangione

In this, their first adventure, Chet and Bernie investigate the disappearance of Madison, a teenage girl who may or may not have been kidnapped, but who has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters.

    Maggie says: "Great entertainment!"
    "Great Family Book"

I enjoyed this book tremendously. I am going to play it in the car for our long, long ride this vacation. I think this is the kind of book that adults and children can have fun listening to and will definitely fuel some good discussions. I just hope the two dogs in the car will enjoy our laughter too.

  • Edge of Justice

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Clinton McKinzie
    • Narrated By Dan Abrams
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In this gripping debut novel, Clinton McKinzie introduces us to Special Agent Antonio Burns, whose routine investigation into the accidental climbing death of a young woman turns into a murder chase that takes him to the heights of Wyoming's wild beauty and the depths of its criminal underworld. Burns is an original and complex hero: an experienced climber, a cop implicated in the shooting deaths of three gang-bangers, brother to a recovering drug-addict and convicted murderer.

Peter says: "not just for climbers"
    "Great Book"

This book was very fun to listen to on my daily walks. I would keep walking because I kept wanting to know what happened next. I love the climbing scenes and the feel of life in Wyoming. I hope Audible gets this author's other books because I'd get them all.

  • Abiding Darkness: Book One of The Black or White Chronicles

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 20 mins)
    • By John Aubrey Anderson
    • Narrated By Lillian Thayer

It is 1945 in Mississippi's cotton country, and Missy Parker is seven years old, strong willed, and very precocious. Her best friend, Junior Washington, lives across Cat Lake from the Parker's plantation. Missy, her big brother, Bobby, and Junior are inseparable. However, the Parkers and the Washingtons are of differing faiths and different races.

    L. Neumar says: "Satisfying Story"

I enjoyed this book tremendously. It wasn't especially well written but the narrator and the storyline made it a very worthwhile book to pass the time while I walked each day. I think the narrator was one of the best I've heard.

  • Now You See Her [Blackstone]

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By Cecelia Tishy
    • Narrated By Anna Fields
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Regina Cutter is the mother of two grown children and the victim of her husband's midlife crisis. Out of a marriage, an income, and a place to live, she has relocated to Boston's Back Bay where her psychic aunt bequeathed her a townhouse...and some paranormal ability.

    Tina Hinrichs says: "very dissapointed!"
"Didn't work as an audio book"

I am a big fan of Anna Fields and mystery books. This book wasn't bad but it just seemed too flat as an audio book. I think this was the kind of book that would be better read when one wanted extremely light reading.Like reading a mildly funny sitcom. It wasn't awful but Audible has so many much better books, even in the light mystery catagory that I could not recommend this one.

  • Twisted (Selected Unabridged Stories)

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 20 mins)
    • By Jeffery Deaver
    • Narrated By Boyd Gaines, Michele Pawk, Frederick Weller

Diverse, provocative, eerie, and inspired, this collection of Jeffery Deaver's best stories exhibits the amazing range and signature plot twists that have earned him the title "master of ticking-bomb suspense" by People. With nods to O. Henry and Edgar Allan Poe, these beautifully crafted pieces pulse with subtle intrigue and Deaver's incomparable imagination.

maxpower says: "hooray for great plotting!"
    "Mystery Lite"

The word that comes to mind when I want to recommend this audio listen is fun. The stories are not humurous but very entertaining and don't require a great deal of concentration. A perfect choice when doing chores or errands. None of the stories are very long and I found it easy to pick up where I left off during a day filled with multiple short drives. I enjoy reading books of short stories but this is my first time listening and definitely won't be the last time. The other reviews give you a good idea what the stories are like I just wanted to stress how well they are done.

  • Dance of Death

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child
    • Narrated By Scott Brick

Agent Pendergast has become one of crime fiction's most endearing characters. His greatest enemy is one who has stalked him all of his life, his cunning and diabolical brother Diogenes. And Diogenes has thrown down the gauntlet. Now, several of the people closest to Pendergast are viciously murdered, and Pendergast is framed for the deeds. On the run from federal authorities, with only the help of his old friend NYPD Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta, Pendergast must stop his brother.

Lu says: "Need to read earlier books in series"
    "Re: Narrator"

In response to aces624 I have to say that I feel Scott Brick does a wonderful job with this book. I admit I am a fan of this narrator but " A Still Life of Crows " was the first book I had ever heard him narrate and felt the character of Pendergast was truly an inspired portrayal. The book came from the library and I was disappointed when the Audible version was so different. I was especially pleased that this version is unabridged. I hope Audible purchases the previos versions in unabridged form.

  • The Closers: Harry Bosch Series, Book 11

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 13 mins)
    • By Michael Connelly
    • Narrated By Len Cariou
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In Los Angeles in 1988, a 16-year-old girl disappeared from her home and was later found dead of a gunshot wound to the chest. The death appeared at first to be a suicide, but some of the evidence contradicted that scenario, and detectives came to believe this was in fact a murder. Despite a by-the-book investigation, no one was ever charged.

    Wheelman says: "Thoroughly enjoyable....."
    "Great Listen"

I used to love to read this author's books but I find listening to them even more enjoyable. This narrator seems to capture the character of Harry Bosch just as the kind of man I imagined him to be. The humanity, strength, fatigue and dedication come through. The book stayed with me long after I finished listening. I am a big fan of audio books and this is one of my favorites so far. The book really comes alive and makes you care about the characters.

  • Black: Book One, The Birth of Evil

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Ted Dekker
    • Narrated By Rob Lamont

Fleeing assailants through alleyways in Denver late one night, Thomas Hunter narrowly escapes to the roof of an industrial building. Then a silent bullet from the night clips his head and his world goes black. When he awakes, he finds himself in an entirely different reality, a green forest that seems more real than where he was. Every time he tries to sleep, he wakes up in the other world, and soon he truly no longer knows which reality is real.

Curtis says: "Should be Section One, not Book One"
"Good read but not as great to listen to"

Maybe it is just me but I felt the book was lessened in audio form. The narrator was't awful but I felt the audio book lost a lot of the depth of the written book. The main character especially came off better in my imagination.

  • The Visitor

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 1 min)
    • By Lee Child
    • Narrated By Hayward Morse

Highflying army career women Sergeant Amy Callan and Lieutenant Caroline Cook are both victims of sexual harassment by their superiors. And now they're both dead. FBI psychological profilers start the hunt for a serial murderer; a smart guy with a score to settle, a loner, an army man, a ruthless vigilante known to them both.

Tim says: "Reacher is great. The Reader is not."

This was by far the worst audio book I've listened to so far. The narrator was actually painful to listen to when he did women's voices (the men's weren't much better). The incompetence of the FBI was not believably presented and the main character was thinly drawn. With so many wonderful books available, please don't waste your time with this stinker.
