After working one of the worst mass killings in U.S. history, Scarpetta returns home to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Exhausted and ill, she's recovering at home when she receives an unsettling call. The body of a young woman has been discovered on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's rugby field. The victim, a graduate student named Gail Shipman, is oddly draped in ivory linen and posed in a way that is too deliberate to be the killer's first strike.

The technical & procedural parts of the Scarpetta stories are fantastic but I am so tired of the depressing Benton, the desperate Marino, and the dysfunctional Lucy. I would love for Scarpetta to be dropped into a location where none of the usual cast are present and she has to solve a murder. But, the Benton, Marino, & Lucy characters got stale 10 stories ago.

    Hey Patricia, enough is enough!

If Ridley Jones had slept 10 minutes later or had taken the subway instead of waiting for a cab, she would still be living the beautiful lie she used to call her life. She would still be the privileged daughter of a doting father and a loving mother. Her life would still be perfect, with only the tiny cracks of an angry junkie for a brother and a charming drunk with shady underworld connections for an uncle to mar the otherwise flawless whole.

    Story

The author doesn't know if the main character is supposed to be a dumb twit that needs to be saved or is a smart competent woman that can save herself and others.

Example, at one point Ridley asks, "Is there something like a reverse phone directory?", then later in the book she uses her computer to go to her Lexis-Nexis account to skip trace someone. D'oh. If you've got the intelligence and acumen to have a L-N account you certainly are going to know that there is a reverse phone directory.

Seems like the author tries very hard to make a damsel-in-distress just so she can have a perfectly buff, gorgeous guy save her while she turns around and saves him. Hum. Why does that story line sound familiar?

A couple of times I thought this was going to be a Stephen King or Dean Koontz type of book. Luckily it didn't go that far. It's more like an amp'ed up Robin Cook -- a very suspenseful medical mystery. I certainly recommend it to mystery/thriller lovers.

I can't imagine anyone doing a better job with the narration. Richard Poe nailed it.

A short story about Reacher's early years. A little too far-fetched, no high school boy thinks that way. Should be attached to one of the other full-size stories as an "Also included", but for $2...

Dick Hill is one of the BEST narrators around. He's perfect for this series.

The grave on the football field is shallow, and easy to spot from a distance. It would have been found sooner, had most of the residents in the black half of Birmingham not been downtown, marching, singing, and being arrested alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. Police detective Ben Wellman is among them when he gets the call about the fresh grave. Under the loosely packed dirt, he finds a young black girl, her innocence taken and her life along with it. His sergeant orders Wellman to investigate, but instructs him not to try too hard.

Such a great story, I did could not stop listening to it.

A tense-filled mystery wrapped in an intense snapshot of American history.

Thomas Cook wrote a winner. Ray Chase did a good job with the narration, but a couple of the voices were over the top. Just don't plan to listen to it at work or with earbuds. You need to play it into a large open room.

Review says, "2013 Winner: Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award - Mystery & Thriller".
It was in no way a breakthrough winner in my book. It dragged on & on, till I was ready to quit half way through. It seemed much more suited for the romance or women's book category than Mystery/Thriller. I wasn't puzzled or thrilled. And, the whining, would it ever stop!

Don't waste your time or money.
