"WOW"
What a great story! Amazing that for such a long book I never once found myself losing interest or getting bored. Each character was interesting and well developed. Tied up well at the end. Another great narration by Caroline Lee.
"Don't make my mistake!"
I bought this book a long time ago and quit listening a couple of hours into it. Mainly I couldn't get past Owen Meany's voice! It sat in my library forever and I kept seeing the great reviews it was getting so I told myself to try it again and stick with it....and this is by far the best audiobook I have listened to. Absolutely incredible in every way. Funny thing is I can't imagine reading it instead of listening to it because...Owen Meany's voice! It was perfect!
I will listen to this one many times over and cherish it more each time. SO much more to this book than I realized. My first John Irving book. I will now listen to his others but I can't imagine any others being better than this. Phenomenal.
"Great story...worst ending EVER"
I almost quit on this after the first third of the story. So glad I stuck with it. Sick and twisted and dark isn't what I care for but I tried it after reading all the hype. I get the hype. Great story keeps you engaged, once you see what's going on, but of all possible endings, this was the worst one. Can't take away a star for that though.
"didn't finish it"
I can't really say the story itself was bad because I didn't finish it. Couldn't get past the narration.
"FANTASTIC!!!!!!"
I was so in love with The Forgotten Garden I got Kate Morton's other books and was less than thrilled. When this one came out I was apprehensive. I am SO glad I got it. It's actually better than The Forgotten Garden.
Written in the same style, the characters are perfectly developed, as is the story. Great story, perfect narration. A great read that I was so sorry to see end. Just perfect!
"I don't get it"
I had just finished Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter and was blown away. I immediately bought this because I was so impressed by the author's writing style. I really wanted to like this. It is well written, but it's just not for me. Didn't even finish listening. I will definitely try another Jess Walter book though.
"Almost as good as The Help"
I bought this book after finishing The Help. I saw Bahni Turpin listed as a narrator and I enjoyed her so much in The Help. Other reviewers compared this book to The Help. I find it hard to compare the two. It is such a different set of circumstances from a different era.
Sad story but a good one.
"Perfect"
I would never have bought this book had it not been for the Audible recommendation and the great reviews. Best decision ever. Absolutely perfect in every way. Narration was stellar and the story was beautifully written.
"Grammar?"
Wow, this was like reading a rough draft or something. Review written by Erica nailed it perfectly. Use a pronoun or use a name. Both? Repeatedly? Absolutely horrible. If the story was really great perhaps one could overlook this. It is not. Seriously, didn't anyone proofread this before printing? Ugh!
"Different from the rest"
Although Louise Penny's books can be read as stand-alone books, it's almost necessary to follow them along in the series, which I have no problem doing as I LOVE her books and look forward to the next.
This was well-written as are all of Louise Penny's books. However, I much prefer the mysteries to take place in Three Pines as I have grown to know all the characters there so well and have been waiting to see what happens with them. I SO hope Gamache returns to Three Pines soon!!
