I have enjoyed a number of Larry Niven's books before, so I decided to give this one a try. It was ok. That is about all I can say about it. It just never really seemed to get going and then it ended. Before I was half way through, I wished for the end. I finished it because I wanted to see where Mr. Niven and Pournelle would go with the story. To sum it up, if you are looking for good entertainment, look at another book. If you want to know more about what happens to when a large body collides with Earth, you could listen to this book, however, I am sure there are plenty of science books that would be more interesting.
I usually take other reviews with a grain of salt. However this time the negative reviews were spot on. There has only been one other book I either wanted to stop listening to or stopped--this is the second. Thank goodness for the 2x setting on the iPhone to get the pain over with since I was curious how it would turn out. A 24hr long book that could have been compressed into two hours. So much lost potential with the story given the first two books.
My father gave me a copy of The Lexus and the Olive Tree almost 10 years ago telling me that it was one of the most important books of our time. He was right. For me it spawned a number of term papers for my MBA and it opened my eyes to the changing, globalizing world. Now with "The World is Flat," Friedman shows how technology has helped to spread globalization--for and good and bad--and to level the playing field for everyone (Why do all my help desk calls end up in India?). As a middle-aged, high tech engineer, it provides a sobering view of the globalizing world and is a little scary as I look towards the next 30 years of my career and my children's future, but as they say knowledge is power. The information provided in this book provides a strong foundation to help me better equip myself as changes continue. I plan to give my children copies of this book to better prepare them, just as my father gave me the Lexus and the Olive Tree. So if you want to start to understand what is behind globalization and how it WILL affect YOU, I highly recommend this book.
