For 200 years, a noble Venetian family has suffered from an inherited disease that strikes their members in middle age, stealing their sleep, eating holes in their brains, and ending their lives in a matter of months. In Papua New Guinea, a primitive tribe is nearly obliterated by a sickness whose chief symptom is uncontrollable laughter. Across Europe, millions of sheep rub their fleeces raw before collapsing. What these strange conditions share is their cause: prions.

The title is a bit misleading. The book is informative, but more about Mad Cow Disease then the actual condition and lives of the family that is afflicted with this disease.

I read other people's reviews on this book, and to the person who said that the protagonist was unlikeable and never apologized for what he did... Well, that reader obviously didn't finish the book. Nelson Demille has a way of writing that absolutely hooks me into the mind of his characters. This one did not disappoint at all. I didn't want this book to end. To the critic of Scott Brick's narration. He did so well in this book that I forgot I was being read to. This is truely a five star book!

I loved this book. I personally thought the plot was great. I too felt at first that I didn't like the reader, but soon got so caught up in the story that I couldn't quit listening.

The freezing Antarctic winter shuts supply lines down completely; conditions are too treacherous for planes and boats and the only connection with the rest of the world is satellite hook-up. During the winter of 1999, Dr. Nielsen, the only physician on a staff of 41 people, discovered a lump in her breast. She was forced to perform a biopsy and in June began to treat herself with chemotherapy, in order to insure that she could survive until her rescue in October.

Interesting story, but author really should not have read her own book. She seemed to stumble through parts of it. The story; however, was good enough that it kept me listening.

  • God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos.
