This is one of the series I thoroughly enjoy and is a new staple for me. Always delivers humorous fun. Very good reader, stories are fluffy but you know that before you buy the book. Entertainment value is solid.
I ovve this series. Our hero is always cracking wise and making me guffaw with his self deprecating humor. Good entertainment, I enjoyed them all.
I wish Audible would allow me to list readers I don't care for. Not even publicly list them, just keep a record so I know not to get a book with a crummy reader. This is one such reader. His stilted delivery and inappropriate pauses clearly don't do any favors to the story. The story needs help too, our hero is a numbskull and I swear he wasn't this dumb in previous books. Overall not the best listening for me.
I rarely give 5 stars on anything, but this couldn't be improved in my estimation; thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the story. This isn't what I would usually listen to, but after reading the listener reviews, thought I would give it a try and soooo glad I did! The poor little orphaned Irish immigrant brought up and living with plantation slaves was so poingnantly portrayed by the author as to set you back in time with them. Not too much of anything and just enough to keep your interest. The characters are alive and human to the listener/reader and the readers are phenomenal! I will be looking for more from Kathleen Grissom!
More of a plot and less of the narrative
Nothing really grabbed me yet; I'm only about 2 hours into it and, as I listen in the car, I find my thoughts wandering about anything BUT the story. I seem to listen in for a minute, nothing going on, then I'm back thinking about other stuff, remember to listen in again, same old narrative. No real reason to pay attention. With all this in mind, I may have to amend this review; perhaps it will improve. Right now though, I'm inclined to move on to something a bit more interesting.
I got the feeling she was writing this book more as an obligation to produce than the desire to tell a good story.
Yes Conn Iggulden, no Michael Healy
Emperor, Gates of Rome
No!He should be made to listen to his performance.
Im upset with the overall effect of the narration in this otherwise stellar book
Told as a story and not a dry recitation of facts.
see above. I never could get into the book enough to finish it.
He did not
I might as well be sitting in a class, listening to a lecture for all the entertainment value. I'm sure he knows his subject matter, but I couldn't make a real person of this character as delivered. I want to be entertained, not advised.
I wish I could give this 3 1/2 stars, because it's better than 3 stars, not quite compelling enough for the 4 stars---I reserve the 4 stars for books that i just HAVE to get back to. Somewhat cooky and off beat, it's a fresh approach to supernatural. Our hero is a bit distracted, but that's by design and his asides make me guffaw from time to time. Overall, worth the listen. If you enjoy bedtime stories and fanciful tales of ghosts, and other ethereal beings, you'll enjoy this.
I couldn't tell you whether this was a good story or not. I'm thinking it probably was, in a noir sort of way, but this narrator was the worst I have ever heard. Listen to him before you buy the book and know it doesn't get any better as time goes on.
I just couldn't get into listening to this book. It was slow, nothing building or anything to pique my interest. That said, everyone's taste differs.
I think this would have been better received by me if the reader didn't drone on so. Good subject matter, but it doesn't hold my attention.
