Most people don't know that Benjamin Franklin almost killed himself trying to electrocute a turkey; the Wright brothers were not the first to fly an airplane; there was a 14th state that the original 13 wouldn't let join the Union; and that Benedict Arnold helped save the American Revolution. All this and more is revealed in That's Not in My American History Book.

    TR says: "A Great Book!"
    "Lots of Fun!"
    Overall

I had lots of fun listening to this book. Trouble is I was constantly making notes on things to research further via the internet!! Things would be a lot different if history were recorded accurately . . . but you know what they say . . . the history books are written by The Winners! So, alas, history books are published with a built-in bias. This book gives a great jumping off point if you want to learn more about the subjects included.

The thinking person's comic offers a hilarious new collection of razor-sharp observations. Carlin dives right in, asking tough questions and sharing philosophical musings, serving up an irresistible assortment of quips, probes, thrusts, and verbal ordeals in these unabridged excerpts. I REALLY like George Carlin . . . but Nepalm and Silly Putty was VERY UNEVEN in its humor. Some things were hysterial, and others are just ho-hum. I've heard other Carlin recordings that are much funnier.

Lots of fun, but I didn't care for the narrator. Seemed too prissy in his acting out the characters parts. You've got to see the movie, too.

From Washington to Kennebunkport to Texas to old Europe and new Europe during the past two decades, Maureen Dowd has trained her binoculars on the Bush dynasty, putting them, as both 41 and 43 have complained to her, "on the couch". Here she wittily dissects the Oedipal loop-de-loop between father and son and the Orwellian logic of the rush to war in Iraq.

Nicholas says: "Fantastic, Erudite, Superb Research"
    "Good . . . But Long"
    Overall

I really enjoyed Bushworld . . . but it did go on and on and on and on . . . Sometime too many outrageous facts can boggle the mind!

An astonishing discovery is made in the South Pacific, 1,000 feet below the surface of the water. A spaceship has been found resting on the ocean floor - a spaceship at least 300 years old. Four scientists rush to the scene - but what they find there only raises more - and increasingly ominous - questions.

Sphere is one of my favorite movies, and this audiobook really complemented the film. Fun to listen!!

One of only sixteen unembedded American journalists who stayed in Baghdad's now-legendary Palestine Hotel throughout the American invasion of Iraq, NPR's Anne Garrels was at the very center of the storm. She brings us the sights, sounds, and smells of our latest war with unparalleled vividness and immediacy.

Native Texan says: "My favorite book of the year!"
    "Fascinating"
    Overall

I truly enjoyed listning to Annie narrate her book. We've all heard the nightly news reports from Baghdad . . . but this book puts us IN BAGHDAD right beside the reporter. It is a wonderful insight into the everyday life of a war correspondent and the small wars they constantly fight just to report the news to us. Thank you, Annie, for letting us peek into your life.

  • The Dharma Bums

    Story
    (7)

Two young men are engraged in a passionate search for Dharma, or Truth. Their pursuit of the Zen way takes them climbing into the high Sierras to seek the lesson of solitude - a lesson that has a hard time surviving their forays into the pagan groves of San Francisco's Bohemia with its marathon wine-drinking bouts, poetry jam sessions, and similar nonascetic pastimes. More Kerouac.

    Susan says: "Kerouac enchants..."
    "A Fun Ride"
    Overall

This book was a "Fun Ride" through the Beat Generation World. AND what really made it so much fun was the narrator, Tom Parker. This narration just rolled and rolled along and made you want to run after it and try to catch some of the off-beat plasure that must have been prevalent in the '50s. LISTENER BEWARE: Don't take anything too seriously and don't expect a solid plot line that drives an arrow straight course!

  • The Twelfth Planet: Book 1 of the Earth Chronicles

    "Interesting, But . . ."
    Overall

Sitchin presents some very interesting ideas, but he passes off his personal assumptions as well-researched facts. I have read at least 6 of Sitchin's books, BUT BE AWARE that other scholars in this field don't necessarily agree with his translations and interpretations.
