  • The Hunger Games

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Suzanne Collins
    • Narrated By Carolyn McCormick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Teddy says: "The Book Deserves The Hype"
"Didn't want to leave my car"

I love to listen to audio books in the car - and this book made me want to stay in the car with the Engine running just to keep listening. The story line is compelling and never allows your interest to find out what happens next to waiver. I am downloading the sequel immediately to pick up on where the story goes. Suzanne Collins is a master of the cliffhanger, and has put together a post-modern classic worth the time and investment.

  • The Power of One

    • UNABRIDGED (21 hrs and 34 mins)
    • By Bryce Courtenay
    • Narrated By Humphrey Bower

Born in a South Africa divided by racism and hatred, this one small boy will come to lead all the tribes of Africa. Through enduring friendships with Hymie and Gideon, Peekay gains the strength he needs to win out. And in a final conflict with his childhood enemy, the Judge, Peekay will fight to the death for justice.

Bob says: "Compelling story lifted higher by the narration"
    "Audiobook version is a must!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is an absolutely outstanding book and I would recommend it to anybody - and already have to several including my daughter who is an English major. This is one of the best written novels I have ever read, and one that will stay with me forever I hope. The book will make you laugh and make you cry and then make you do it all over again.

What did you like best about this story?

The best part about this story is the story itself. It is such an incredible journey and it is build on the solid foundation of deep characters that come to life through the excellent narration of the audio book.

What does Humphrey Bower bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Humphrey Bower does such an incredible job of narration that I truly think the story would not been nearly as magical if I were to read it. His use of such a wide range of styles, languages, and dialects that include pronunciation of words from at least 10 different languages is incredible. Absoluttle he gets 11 out of 10!

If you could rename The Power of One, what would you call it?

I would not rename this book it is exactly what it should be.

    Any additional comments?

This book was something I happened upon from a daily deal and it is one of the biggest reason's I love Audible. I had never heard of the book nor the author, but I read about the story in a good synopsis and decided to give it a try (didn't hurt that it was super highly rated as well). Absolutely worth every bit of time and it is a must listen to book. If you have simply read it and never listened to it I highly recommend this version as it is on my Mount Rushmore of all time best produced Audiobooks.

  • One Second After

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By William R. Forstchen
    • Narrated By Joe Barrett
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

    Sara says: "A terrifying story"
"An absolute must read novel for everyone."
Where does One Second After rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

This book is now among the top 5 audiobooks I have ever listened to. The performance was excellent, but the key to this books is the story that was told by the author. This book will keep you up an night, in it's haunting insight into human nature and how much dependence we all have on modern technology and how quickly we could de-volve into what we would no consider barbarism that no longer exists in modern society.

What other book might you compare One Second After to and why?

This book reminds me of 1984 - it is a book that looks at how humanity could look in a post-modern nightmare scenario. The difference here is the use of real technology that does exist could bring about the One Second After scenario to life, whereas 1984 requires a collective agreement of society to permit socialistic rule.

What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Joe was able to bring across an emotional experience that I don't think would be re-created by reading. Hearing the emotion expressed verbally and in the thoughts of the characters was extremely powerful in the rendition.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A film too frighteningly real to believe, with a message to us all: we are not nearly as safe in our modern society as we would like to believe.
