"Didn't want to leave my car"
I love to listen to audio books in the car - and this book made me want to stay in the car with the Engine running just to keep listening. The story line is compelling and never allows your interest to find out what happens next to waiver. I am downloading the sequel immediately to pick up on where the story goes. Suzanne Collins is a master of the cliffhanger, and has put together a post-modern classic worth the time and investment.
"An absolute must read novel for everyone."
This book is now among the top 5 audiobooks I have ever listened to. The performance was excellent, but the key to this books is the story that was told by the author. This book will keep you up an night, in it's haunting insight into human nature and how much dependence we all have on modern technology and how quickly we could de-volve into what we would no consider barbarism that no longer exists in modern society.
This book reminds me of 1984 - it is a book that looks at how humanity could look in a post-modern nightmare scenario. The difference here is the use of real technology that does exist could bring about the One Second After scenario to life, whereas 1984 requires a collective agreement of society to permit socialistic rule.
Joe was able to bring across an emotional experience that I don't think would be re-created by reading. Hearing the emotion expressed verbally and in the thoughts of the characters was extremely powerful in the rendition.
A film too frighteningly real to believe, with a message to us all: we are not nearly as safe in our modern society as we would like to believe.
