Three people living lives they never wanted, hiding secrets that even those closest to them would never suspect, will find that the past never truly fades away. Even as the terrible consequences of long-ago events crash together in the present and threaten to ruin lives, they will come to the startling realization that they may not want to forget the past at all.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Harlan Coben is usually laugh out loud funny and there are moments when his language is delightful. I just didn't like the story. None of the characters appealed, were at all deep, or drawn so that we took a deep interest.

What could Harlan Coben have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    less gruesome

Would you be willing to try another one of Scott Brick’s performances?

yes. I usually consider any book he narrates, but somehow he is awkward or maybe his emphasis in this reading is just not believable. sometimes I would just groan at his emphasis.

Bonnie and Clyde, they thought. And what's-his-name, the sidekick. Three teenagers with dead-end lives, and chips on their shoulders, and guns. The first person they killed was a highway patrolman. The second was a woman during a robbery. Then, hell, why not keep on going? As their crime spree cuts a swath through rural Minnesota, some of it captured on the killers' cell phones and sent to a local television station, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers joins the growing army of cops trying to run them down.

Bill says: "Good. Not Great. But Virgil is Hard to Skip."

In her beloved New York Times best sellers Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, and, most recently, Shanghai Girls, Lisa See has brilliantly illuminated the potent bonds of mother love, romantic love, and love of country. Now, in her most powerful novel yet, she returns to these timeless themes, continuing the story of sisters Pearl and May from Shanghai Girls, and Pearl’s strong-willed 19-year-old daughter, Joy.

Maida says: "Dreams of Joy and all of Lisa See's books"
"China--how could we let this happen?"
    Overall

Be sure to read Shanghai girls first. I listened to it again before listening to Dreams of Joy.
Shocking. What a waste that so many have to struggle just to live simply. The power of those who wish to
    enslave others at any expense.

Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

Jan says: "What a great surprise!"
    "outstanding"
    Overall

Fabulous book, extraordinary narration. Let's hope Kathryn Stockett keeps writing.
