A very enjoyable listen. Had some good twists and plenty of suspense. Went through it faster than I usually go through books because it kept my interest and kept me wanting to know how the next situation turned out. A little corny in places, like when the narrator kept whispering the word "dead", but all in all a good story with an excellent narrator.
I have spent the past 6 months just trying to find another book like this one to no avail. I have hundreds of books on Audible being a member for years and doing a ton of driving and I absolutely loved this book. I have suggested it several friends and relatives and it has yet to disappoint.
It's your David -vs- Goliath type story and it's chock full of excitement, twists, humor, innocence and nostalgia. If you play any sort of MMORPG than you will definitely relate, but even if you don't it will not disappoint. Society has turned semi-apocalyptic due to oil reserves run out, education has gone virtual created by a multibillionaire who made his money through the worlds most popular MMORPG. He dies and leaves his fortune to whomever can find the golden egg. This is a multi step process and is nearly impossible to accomplish. Success on the path though, just may have very real and very mortal consequences.
Do not pass this one up. Trust me when I say this is not a gamers only book. I am a 40 something guy. The only gamer knowledge I have is when I try to play along with my teen kids. I promise you won't be disappointed.
I've gone through a series of Zombie books including World War Z & Hissers recently. I know I'll be crucified for saying this but, World War Z was a snooze fest for me. Hissers I enjoyed more, but I think I would have enjoyed it much more if I read it in my teens but still appreciated the story tremendously.
This story was awesome! Written so well you could visualize being there. Exciting and fresh and narrated perfectly. Listened to this with my wife and 2 teen boys during 10 hours of round trip driving (also started into the second book of the series which is even better) and we all loved it, which is surprising because my wife has no use for these type of books.
I know I'll take some heat for this, but I am looking forward to the movie. From what I see from the movie trailers, it is absolutely nothing like the book, but more what I like about zombie stories.
By no means is it a bad story, hence the 3 rating. It just isn't what I look for in a zombie story, hence the 3 rating.
I much prefer heart pounding, intense, heat of the moment, no-way-out, oh s#!* all is lost stories. Always better if I do not know if the characters are going to survive. Obviously in this "zombie documentary" they do because their the ones telling the stories post apocalypse.
If you enjoy docudrama's, or are a die hard Zombie Fanatic it's a really nicely done book. But if you just want heart pounding action, chose something like the Day by Day Armageddon books. I enjoyed those immensely.
Once again Odd Thomas takes us on another intense adventure with plenty of wit and humor. Koontz has a way in these series of bringing forth horrors that could actually be believable and intermingles it with the totally fantastical. Fun and intense. One of the better books in the series. Definitely read the previous books in the series first though, as he refers continuously to earlier adventures and characters.
The Cypress House by Michael Koryta. Which also is a terrific book with a great narrator. Not to give anything away in the book, but the main character also has a bit of a supernatural ability similar but not the same as Odd Thomas
Love him as usual. He has such terrific poise and wonderful character voices. You really feel that he IS Odd Thomas.
A few chuckles and disgust at the villains.
Definitely a worthwhile read, but a better listen due to Mr Brick.
It started pretty strong but I lost interest as it went on. I believe that is because the author lost originality and direction as it went on. Also, the narrator was awful with poor judgment in inflection and tone. The female voices sounded like a man talking like a woman, which he is mind you, but superior narrators don't make it seem so.
I was just looking through my library and came across this title and thought...Hey, when did I get this book. After listening to a few minutes I remembered that I just finished this book about 2 weeks ago. Shows you how forgetable the story is. Very average.
I don't know...maybe cause it's been a long time since I was 14, but this book really did nothing for me. Unless your a teenager, you'll probably have a hard time connecting to the characters. I have 2 teenage boys, so maybe they'll enjoy it. But I have a feeling that they'll be dissapointed by the lame ending. It's like the author forgot to finish the story.
This is my favorite of this series so far. I think it is book four and I have been reading them in order. Unfortunately, the last one "The Cabinet of Curiosities" was abridged, which I really hate. Feel like I'm getting ripped off half a story.
Anyway, this one was a lot of fun, just wasn't so crazy about the narrator. Not the worst I've heard by any means, just not so hot.
Looking forward to the next book "Brimstone". Once again though, abridged. Grrrrr....
Some minuscule thought provocation...I guess. But even that was quite puerile. Otherwise, the story was boring and tended to drone on perversely. Basically, a fictional story about making up a fictional story to supplement a true story. If you are in high school and are looking for something to ponder relating to religion then you may find this deep and intriguing. Otherwise, I wouldn't suggest. No suspense, no humor and nothing to take away of true value.
I just started listening to Koryta stories over the past few months. This by far is my least favorite. Not his best story, maybe a 3.5 out of 5. The odd and often annoying style of the narrator is what brought my rating down. Dissapointed, but not by any means giving up on Koryta. I think he would be well advised to stick with Robert Petkoff reading his books.
