Durant lucidly describes the philosophical systems of such world-famous “monarchs of the mind” as Plato, Aristotle, Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Kant, Voltaire, and Nietzsche. Along with their ideas, he offers their flesh-and-blood biographies, placing their thoughts within their own time and place and elucidating their influence on our modern intellectual heritage. This book is packed with wisdom and wit.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend if the friend was studying philosophy

What was most disappointing about Will Durant’s story?

I was hoping for an encapsulation and summation of the great philosophers

What about Grover Gardner’s performance did you like?

It was difficult to tell the difference of the authors input versus the written words pf the philosopher. ie there was not a voice change.

Could you see The Story of Philosophy being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    No way

Many consider this rich social commentary to be Jane Austen's finest novel. It is certainly among her more famous ones. Austen sets her entertaining study of manners and misconceptions against the backdrop of a class-conscious society in 18th-century England.

What made the experience of listening to Pride and Prejudice the most enjoyable?

I was pleasantly surprised at my enjoyment of the story. I had heard of Jane Austin's books, but "they are more for women and girls". I was very wrong, it is a great book for everyone to enjoy.

What other book might you compare Pride and Prejudice to and why?

I was also very pleasantly surprised at Oliver Twist.

What does Flo Gibson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her voices of the different characters helped to give a great flavor to the book.

  • In Cold Blood

Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s a story that most people know, told here in an unforgettable way – an audio masterpiece that rivals the best thrillers, thanks to Capote genre-defining words and Brick’s subtle but powerful characterizations. On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would highly recommend this book to both friends and foe.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The information on the two main characters was very helpful to fill out the picture of the crime and the circumstances leading to the crime.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to several of Scott Brick's narrations and this ranks as high as any other.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

The reinforcement of the adage, "you can not judge a book by it's cover".

In this comprehensive history, Stanley Karnow demystifies the tragic ordeal of America's war in Vietnam. The book's central theme is that America's leaders, prompted as much by domestic politics as by global ambitions, carried the United States into Southeast Asia with little regard for the realities of the region. Karnow elucidates the decision-making process in Washington and Asia and recounts the political and military events that occurred after the Americans arrived in Vietnam.
