This one is terrific! It's not a "bit of fluff", but there are still moments of humor, and the reader is lured cleverly into developing feelings right along with the heroine. A difficult task, considering the initial actions of the "Hero"! I loved this one and Book 2 as well.

Well written - charming story - excellent narrator. Humor, pathos, great story line... what more could you want!?! Rosalyn does her usual amazing job of voicing the various characters in a believable, and charming way. Julie is at her best with a touching, innovative twist on the story line. Though there is some slight darkness in the background to the story, it's not allowed to intrude on the uplifting feeling that pervades the book. Just adds to the satisfaction of a great resolution. Well done!

I enjoy Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, and Mary Balogh, and usually look to see if any of their books are added to the "new" list. If so, I typically purchase them. It's great to have another author good enough to add to the list! Vicky's books, so far, have proved ineresting and enjoyable - not too dark or too lightweight either. This was another in a string of very enjoyable efforts on her part.

I aso really like Elizabeth Jasicki's narration. You probably know what it's like to see an author you like and quickly check the narrator..... "Oh terrific!" - and then the click to "add to cart." I've begun searching by narrators that I like as well, and have added her to the list. ,

I was not disappointed in either case with this book!

Julian Quinn always provides a compelling storyline. What really differentiates her, though, is her keen insight into human nature and her marvelous, often wry, sense of humor! Rosalyn Landor is absolutelyl perfect as a narrator, as she clearly "gets it" and has the capacity to act, as much as read.

I also appreciate Julia Quinn's ability to take the reader to the "highs", and clearly represent the "lows" -- without wallowing in the "lows" chapter after chapter. Bright, witty, compelling romance! Thank you, Julia and Rosalyn!

Justine Eyre is one of my very favorate narrators, and she does jan admirable job, as usual. .

I might go see a movie version of this book, in large part, because I liked the earlier Hadley Green books. It would be interesting to see how some scenes would be played.

I think I mostly just prefer lighter, wittier historical romances.

I don't know... Maybe it was my mood, but I really think I just did not care as much about being seduced by this male protagonist. Anne Stuart has been incredibly artful about developing previous characters, and took me right along with the heroine. This time, it just seemed a little too dark -- without the compensatory elation! Still a great narrator. I'll also allow that, sometimes, when I listen to a book again, I like it better. That may be the case with this one -- as I LOVED the first two!

This series really keeps me listening! The narrator, as well as the story, keep the "reader" deeply involved. Becoming a huge fan of this series! Will also look for more by this narrator.

I'm not certain why this only got a one star rating, but I enjoyed it quite thoroughly - as I always seem to do, with Mary Balogh's novels! I confess that I was awaiting a match for "Con" (a character type I particularly enjoy) -- and that made it all the more exciting. I wonder if the reviewer did not care for the slightly stylized rendition that Anne Flosnik offers. When the story is good, though, she gives it "front stage" and allows it to shine on its own merit. Additionally, her tone is well suited to the dry, urbane humor that marks Balogh's works. I give it a four + -- probably mostly to allow a bit of room in case I need a future five -- and recall thinking that this is one I'll want to "read" again!!!

If you enjoy historical romance novels that are well-written, but lighthearted and predominantly happy, this one is NOT for you. 95% of the novel is spent recounting tragic, deeply disturbing, even sexually depraved events, steeped in a sense of loss and inescapable sadness. The ending -- a rather distant commentary on social progress -- is, to me, not worth the emotional turmoil the reader has, by that point, borne. Also, the cookie that is tossed the reader in terms of a - somewhat - happy ending is utterly insufficient.

That being said, the book probably accomplishes what it sets out to do, (though with a bit of a sledge hammer approach). It is well read -- excellent narrator. I just wished fervently that I hadn't bought it. Way too disturbing/depressing!
