"You’ve seen it all before. A malicious online rumor costs a company millions. A political sideshow derails the national news cycle and destroys a candidate. Some product or celebrity zooms from total obscurity to viral sensation. What you don’t know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like me. I’m a media manipulator. In a world where blogs control and distort the news, my job is to control blogs—as much as any one person can."

Would you listen to Trust Me, I'm Lying again? Why?

Probably not because the central theme of Don't Trust Anything the media tells you is clear enough the first time.

What other book might you compare Trust Me, I'm Lying to and why?

    Confessions of an Ecomonic Hitman

What does Ryan Holiday bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He is telling his story with all the emotional inflections added to his words that would never transfer via print.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was saddened to have many suspicions validated.

    Any additional comments?

A worth while read...perhaps a little over the top here and there but if it peaks your skepticism and makes you question the media it has served its purpose.

  • Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 13 mins)

    Story

In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish. Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner.

Should we pay children to read books or to get good grades? Should we allow corporations to pay for the right to pollute the atmosphere? Is it ethical to pay people to test risky new drugs or to donate their organs? What about hiring mercenaries to fight our wars? Auctioning admission to elite universities? Selling citizenship to immigrants willing to pay?

  • The Road to Freedom: How to Win the Fight for Free Enterprise

    • UNABRIDGED (5 hrs and 27 mins)

Entrepreneurship, personal responsibility, and upward mobility: These traditions are at the heart of the free enterprise system, and have long been central to America's exceptional culture. In recent years, however, policymakers have dramatically weakened these traditions - by exploding the size of government, propping up their corporate cronies, and trying to reorient our system from rewarding merit to redistributing wealth. Arthur C. Brooks shows that this trend cannot be reversed through materialistic appeals.

    Story
What did you love best about The Road to Freedom?

Liberty is an intellectual concept that takes effort to fully appreciate, but Brooks makes the moral case for freedom easy to understand.

What other book might you compare The Road to Freedom to and why?

While obviously baselined on F.A. Hayek's brilliant "Road to Serfdom", Brooks masterfully replaces academic arguments with moral justifications for free markets and free people.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

Capitalism is obvioulsy morally superior to socialism.

    Any additional comments?

This is a superb piece of work.
