Witty and insightful satire, characters I enjoyed following, wonderful writing. The narration fit the book well. Overall, a delightful, entertaining book!
Parenting books are almost invariably insufferable as they offer some combination of patronizing, ineloquence, triviality, and sanctimony. This book was a clear exception: well-written, interesting and relevant. However, the narration was enervating: most French words, terms, names, and expressions were pronounced incorrectly, and all French speaking characters were performed with a fake French accent (in English). However, even with these shortcomings, I very much enjoyed listening to this book.
I resented the mispronunciation of most French words, names, and expressions (from bonjour to Paris Match, through Virginie and innumerable others). Does no one check these things for a narrator who clearly does not speak french? Also deeply disliked the fake French accent (in English) in which all French-speaking characters were read.
The chapters on waiting, food, and discipline.
It was time well spent - especially after I skipped some parts. The book is very uneven. Some great storytelling (memorizing, I guess), some insightful discussion/musings, and some trite parts. I especially did not enjoy - even resented - the stereotyped, cliched and downright boring chapter on a mother's relation to her son and mother in law. I did appreciate the chapter on the author's struggles during her pregnancies, and accounts of household labor division.
I was thinking about some of her points; good food for thought / points of reference.
I thought the reader was great.
I don't usually read books twice, some probably won't listen to it again - but I did find myself wishing it would go on, revisiting the story in my head for days after I finished it.
It was a good story, and well told. I liked the art world setup, the mix of historical detail and contemporary narrative, the plot was very compelling and not too trite or predictable - it was very fun.
Breathy; vocal fry
It's a good name
I did not like the reader. At one point I almost stopped listening because it was getting unbearable (but I pulled through... Glad I did). Somehow she made most conversations sound like sexual situations or over-dramatic exchanges.
