"Fascinating"
I am going to listen to this one repeatedly. Great stories, guaranteed to point out just how rusty one's knowledge of history really is!
"Riveting"
Like the proverbial trainwreck, it was horrifying but I couldn't pull myself away. What a fascinating view of "classes in America" These nannies need some union protections to guarantee that they'll actually get paid in a timely fashion, work regular hours, and get at least minimal respect. I never realized how good Julia Roberts can be - excellent reading, very funny... EARMUFFS!!!
"Unabridged Rocks!"
I have read this book many times over the years but it was a joy to hear it spoken! The only problem with this version is that the reader enunciates each syllable as if he is reading for ESL listeners. Once you get used to it it is fine, though!
"Unabridged?"
Great book, I only wish it was the unabridged version.
"Unabridged all the way!"
In a Sue Grafton, nothing is irrelevant! I love what Judy Kaye does with the character's voice and tone. This was a great read.
"Lyrical"
I haven't been this transported by a book in years. I listened to it three times! Beautiful, Brava!
"Excellent story"
beautiful story, beautifully read. This is the perfect book for a long plane ride or a long weekend.
"Where all the adventure movies came from"
What a great audiobook. The story is classic and the narration is superb. I'll listen to all Patrick Tull's audios. The writing is very dated in terms of racism, classism, sexism and nationalism. As you would expect for 1886 and and for Haggard, the quintessential insular Englishman.
The other reviewer thought it got off to a slow start but I loved the detail. Haggard, or rather Quartermain, describes, provisions, rounds of ammunition and other gear like a true hunter and I loved his details about the colt revolvers and the winchester repeating rifles taking the same caliber ammo and how important that is in a survival situation. Great stuff! Contrast that to our modern weapons where every piece of equipment takes a different ammunition.
