  • The Expected One

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By Kathleen McGowan
    • Narrated By Linda Stephens
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Two thousand years ago, Mary Magdalene hid a set of scrolls in the French Pyrenees: the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, her version of the life of Jesus and the events of the New Testament. Protected by supernatural forces, these sacred scrolls could be uncovered only by a special seeker, one who fulfills the ancient prophecy of L'Attendu, the Expected One.

Sheila says: "the Expected One (unabridged)"
    "Don't expect too much"

This one wasn't a favorite. I like the genre but I thought this was pretty repetitive and in spite of all of the build-up of the heroine's role as the "expected one" it seemed to me when all was said and done that the author (and for that matter the spirit of Mary M.) didn't expect too much of her. This seemed a bit incongrous considering the general theme of the work.

  • Cross Country

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By James Patterson
    • Narrated By Peter J. Fernandez, Dion Graham
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When the home of Alex Cross's oldest friend, Ellie Cox, is turned into the worst murder scene Alex has ever seen, the destruction leads him to believe that he's chasing a horrible new breed of killer. As Alex and his girlfriend, Brianna Stone, become entangled in the deadly Nigerian underworld of Washington D.C., what they discover is shocking: a stunningly organized gang of lethal teenagers headed by a powerful, diabolical man--the African warlord known as the Tiger.

Lisa says: "Not the same read"
    "absolutely ridiculous"

while I applaud some of the intent - exposing horros in Darfur etc. The story went beyond implausible to annoyingly implausible.

  • Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Betrayal

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 33 mins)
    • By Eric Van Lustbader
    • Narrated By Jeremy Davidson

Jason Bourne takes on a mission to rescue his only friend in the CIA, Martin Lindros, who disappeared in Africa while tracking shipments of yellowcake uranium. Once safely back in America, Lindros persuades Bourne to help track the money trail of terrorists buying the nuclear material in Odessa. But once there, Bourne is hampered by confusing flashbacks, and he wonders: is someone brainwashing him in order to throw him off the trail? Worse, is the man he saved in Africa really Martin Lindros?

    timchi says: "Disappointing"
    "Erzatz Ludlum"

I bought this hurriedly thinking is was a real Ludlum book. While I was entertained, the plot was even more unbelieveable than usual - more Bond than Bourne - and while Ludlum is not the world best writer (he's pretty good) this book borrowed the character but not much more. Don't bother with Jaw's III in other words

  • The Amber Room

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Steve Berry
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Life is good for Atlanta judge Rachel Cutler. She loves her job, loves her kids, and remains civil to her ex-husband, Paul. But everything changes when her father, a man who survived the horrors of World War II, dies under strange circumstances and leaves behind clues to a secret he kept his entire life...a secret about something called the Amber Room.

    Bliss says: "Where's the editor?"
    "Amen to last reviewer"

Not a well written book. Truly hated the shallow characters asnd couldn't believe how stupid they were. Still a bit of fun as the story is ok.

  • Kafka on the Shore

    • UNABRIDGED (19 hrs and 8 mins)
    • By Haruki Murakami
    • Narrated By Sean Barrett, Oliver Le Sueur

Kafka on the Shore follows the fortunes of two remarkable characters. Kafka Tamura runs away from home at 15, under the shadow of his father's dark prophesy. The aging Nakata, tracker of lost cats, who never recovered from a bizarre childhood affliction, finds his pleasantly simplified life suddenly turned upside down.

Melinda says: "Brilliant Meandering--what was in those brownies.."
    "Kept me interested"

This was an unusual listen. I really quite like it for a while: the man who could talk to cats and some of the other characters were quite engrossing. I just never quite felt I got the point, feeling perhaps a bit of a cultaural divide.
