I really enjoyed this story, a rehashing and a nice interweaving of classical fairytales. The characters were unique, their desires understandable, the world an exciting mix of familiar and new.
But the narration really threw me out of it. The narration was over done the ENTIRE time. For critical moments, it would have been fine, after listening it to hours and hours, it really wears down on a person. I found I couldn't take this story very seriously, because I found the narration for baffling.
I want to recommend this so much, but I can't recommend the narration.
This book is all about the characters, how they develop, and other peoples perceptions of each other. It's absolutely fantastic! And really makes re-reads all the more enjoyable. And in typical Brandon Sanderson fashion, the magic is interesting, unique, and fully fleshed out. Even after this stand alone is complete, I want to know more about this world!
The only things that keep this from a full 5 star review is that the book is a little long, I think some of the middle repetition could have been striped out. I also felt that the ending was a little anti-climatic, a little 'ta-da, resolution!'
Will I listen to this again? Absolutely, already in the middle of my second listen!
Brandon Sanderson has written that this is his favorite piece to date, and it absolutely shows.
In classic fashion, he creates an intriguing, unique, and diverse magic structure loaded with possibilities. But he also makes wonderfully believable characters that are diverse and varied. And to cap it off, the story is really interesting as well!
In short, the three pillars: world, character, and story, are all strong and accounted for. I cannot recommend this story enough. It's short, but I've already listened to it 3 times, loving it more and more. Please listen!
This book was recommended to me as a fun fast-paced book with a strong female protagonist. Unfortunately, I was misinformed. The book is slow and repetitive to the point of being obnoxious. The characters find themselves in the same problems over and over again, and the ending, even the 'final boss' is abrupt and anti climatic. Feeling like it was stuck in later.
As for the strong female lead, Del is strong, but the entire world suffers to make her appear that way. The ENTIRE BOOK Tiger says (at least once a chapter ) that she's a WOMAN, And therefore weak. Remember I said it was repetitive? Also, all other women are jealous 'slut' characters to serve as a foil to the more virtuous Del, who does not get jealous and is serenely beautiful, which is irritating to say the least.
In regards the the narrator, I had no problem with him at all, I feel he had very difficult material to work with.
In short, I will not being listening to more books in this series
I loved this book, it's dark and magical, a wonderful mystery through generations and time. The prose and the pacing is excellent, and you really sympathize with everyone. It's a bit on the dark and morbid side, so if you like that, I would highly recommend it to you.
I love listening to this right before I go to bed. It's nice and lulling and the professor gives you a good overview of Egypt. He tells you interesting little stories, and also is very clear when he is giving opinion and when he is giving fact. This is highly enjoyable, and I would recommend this to any one!
Word of warning, he has a very distinct and thick accent. Prepare for him you say "you know?" at least 5 times a lecture. But he does sound very friendly.
If you are looking for a light hearted book that you can just sit back and enjoy, than this is your book!
It follows closely the mold of reluctant hero, who finally accepts destiny, and then comes to be the most powerful (like god-status) and vanquishes evil. I think their were some really nice deviations, like her romantic independence, and the capability of other female characters besides just the main character. That being said, it's still sweetly simple, and doesn't require a lot of thought. I won't be reading the sequels, but this book is complete enough to be a stand alone.
Biggest complaint: This is a TRILOGY, and I want book 2 NOW
But really, in all honesty, this a pretty good book. I think that this book does really well to establish a world, and it raises a LOT of questions about its structure that I hope will be solved later on. And I'm excited about that.
I will say the abilities are interesting, though, again, still not well understood. I hope more books will bring clarification. I was also slightly disappointed by the love arc. It's a dashing, mysterious, brooding, super handsome not-human that displays his weakness to our main character alone! For being so interesting in other areas, this section of the story is startlingly cliche. But don't let this stop you, I still think this is a good story.
As for the narrator, I will say she began to get on my nerves. She was a little monotonous, which I think may be partially due to the whole book being written with tiny sentences.
what I enjoy the most about this book is the main character. She's a teenager that is always angry and out to prove ... something. But she doesn't know what, and is frustrated by that feeling. And I really like that angle, and I think the narrator really executed this character well.
The story took some nice unexpected turns, and the supporting cast is all fun and enjoyable. That being said, I don't have a desire to read books 2 & 3. This first book just didn't capture my imagination enough. Still, I think that this book would do really well with a younger audience, 10yrs to 15yrs I think
I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say this: surprisingly depressing.
The best parts of this story are the characters. Every character is motivated by complex and completely relatable experiences. No decision ever seemed innately flawed, it's really easy to understand, but the series of choices leads to some dark situations.
I will warn you, this book is not for the faint of heart. It is not light hearted at all. But if you can get through it, it is very very good. It left me with all sorts of feelings for days
