Alabama detective Cooper Devereaux makes no apologies for his luxe lifestyle or the way he does his job. Most cops haven't lived the kind of life he has - starting out as an orphan, raised by a grizzled cop savior - and most don't use his kind of high-risk tactics. But he may have met his match in fellow detective Jan Loflin, who's fresh off a long undercover stint in Vice when they're partnered on a case that will test them both beyond their direst nightmares.

The beginning of the book was a little slow but it built from there. I really liked the main character and would love to see more of him in future books from this author.
Another title for my review could have been: Madness skips a generation.

I loved this book. I loved the main characters and how the book addresses a compenaray issue in a way that enhances the story. I also loved that the main character is an MMA fighter. She is a bad was and I hope the author builds a series around her.
This book is worth a credit. You will not be disappointed.

Sydney Richardson already has her hands full running two successful Madison, Wisconsin, eateries and enjoying the company of handsome blues bar owner Clay Hawthorne. She doesn't have the time or patience for his ex's homecoming. Two decades ago, Miranda Greer abandoned Clay with their infant child. Now she claims she wants to make amends, reconnect with her son, and settle down. None of which is to Sydney's liking, because behind Miranda's chic, saccharine façade, Sydney senses something very bad.

really liked the story. Sydney character is beginning to wear on me a bit. I think it's time for her to choose Clay and the two of them should start to unravel. her parentage, which is where the real mystery is.

Claudia Mair Burney's mysteries featuring Amanda Bell Brown have been praised for their sassy combination of smarts and spirituality. Brown is a forensic psychologist with a spiritual background. When a murder investigation unearths connections to a past she'd rather forget, she's dragged into the turmoil before she knows it. She'll need a strong faith in the Lord to get through this one - and having a very fine detective on her side won't hurt either.

The story had promise but never really reached its potential. I had a love/hate relationship with the main character. I loved that she was so willing to see the good in everyone. I hated that she was so naive and gullible. There were times when I wanted her to get a clue. By the end I think I truly grasped the extent that her traumatic experience with the cult impacted her life and ability to have healthy relationships with others. Maybe this shouldn't have been classified as a mystery. It would be better as just a work of fiction where the author could have explored Bell's trauma more.
I will give the author another chance with this character. Hopefully the next one in the series is better.
