It's April, 1988, a month before Kinsey Millhone's 38th birthday, and she's alone in her office doing paperwork when a young man arrives unannounced. He has a preppy air about him and looks as if he'd be carded if he tried to buy booze, but Michael Sutton is 27, an unemployed college dropout. Twenty-one years earlier, a four-year-old girl disappeared, and a recent reference to her kidnapping has triggered a flood of memories.

Henry Grey doesn't particularly care for having been born the heir to an earldom. He is a reserved young man whose greatest problem is his mother's matchmaking plots and whose greatest joy is to ride as an amateur steeplechase jockey. But on a sudden impulse, he throws in his respectable desk job to join a firm that transports racehorses all over the world. Yardman Transport proves to be Henry's passport to many things, not the least the girl he loves, and a tidy little racket that brings him face to face with death.

The first half of the book was very confusing. I only hung on because I have loved her other Mary Russell offerings. The second half did improve but as a whole, this was my least favorite volume.

I really enjoy this series of Sherlock Holmes spinoffs. Mary Russell is a fabulous character and the perfect match for the famous detective. The reader captures the tone of the time and does the various voices believably.

Stephen Sheerin was born to play on Broadway - or at least, under it. He's a musician, a conductor, and his dream is to music-direct a big Broadway musical. After years of toiling in the pit of some of the best-loved (and loathed) hits on the Great White Way, he's just been given his big break. Can life really be going that well? Of course not.

When the body of a night watchman at the British Museum is found sprawled in the shadow of a rare 19th-Dynasty mummy case, panic ensues. No one doubts that the guard's untimely demise is the work of an ancient Egyptian curse. No one, that is, except that tart-tongued Victorian Egyptologist, Amelia Peabody, whose remarkable talent for criminal investigation has frustrated villains from London to Cairo.

    Overall

The story may be good but the reader is awful. I was looking forward to this "catch up" book in the Amelia Peabody series but not sure I can even finish it. Barbara Rosenblat was such an outstanding reader, having the ability to sound like all the characters. And why on earth didn't they AT LEAST get someone with a British accent???
Amelia and her family are from England, NOT America.
