I enjoyed the book very much, but I think the narrator was perfect for it. Each character had their own voice, and the inflections were so good that I could easily picture the person speaking. I would highly recommend this one.
The synopsis of this book does not do it justice, but I cannot think how to change it. Listening to the characters brings everything to life. I could picture the island and smell the salt air, and I felt like I knew these characters so well that I could have easily settled down in Guernsey myself. Definitely worth the five stars in my estimation!
don't know if it was the realistic way the narrator read it, or that I read it so quickly, so became totally absorbed in it; but it was terribly depressing to me (thank goodness it ended well, to my satisfaction). I became very absorbed in the trials of the family, and the unfairness of the situations they found themselves in (trying not to give it all away). I would have to turn it off for hours because of the malaise it dragged me into. well-written, but I didn't laugh as much, and felt very frustrated for the family.
not as good as The Millionaires. My husband and I listened to it on a long drive; it held our attention and the basic story was ok, but there were several glaring errors (someone suddenly running who has a fractured ankle?!). We probably picked up more errors than if we were reading it. kind of a cross between Stuart Woods and Clive Cussler as far as the characters. probably won't buy any more DB any time soon. reader was not bad.
This was a strange book; it did not follow the same type format that I expected. There were unexpected twists and turns, and I kept getting irritated with the main character for not doing what I considered to be obvious (in our culture, not in hers). I found I liked it more after I had finished it- it was one of those books that you keep thinking about.
I listened to the first chapter of this and liked the story and narrator well enough to download the book. This book was so engrossing that I found myself listening to it when I should have been doing other things, and thinking about the story when I was not listening. I was disappointed to discover that this was not a long series of books; I was looking forward to working my way through it!
stumbled across this book years ago and loved it. have introduced several people to it.
I listened to this book twice- it was even better the second time. Beautifully crafted descriptions, nail-biting plots, good narration (yes, I disagree with some of the other reviewers!). I picked up some things I missed the first time. A book to buy in hardback, as well. Should be a classic literary book. don't know how she will write a better one, but I hope she keeps writing! One of my favorites. I listened while shopping, driving, and finally gave up trying to do any work that required concentration when I was near the end- I chose work that would allow me to finish listening to the book!
I have read all the Pern books and many others- this book was disappointing in that I was expecting something similar to the other books, but this is more childlike. It read more like a children's book than an adult book, and for all I know, is. It was worth finishing, but just was not as gripping as the dragon books that I love.
