Eleven years have passed since SHEVA was discovered in human DNA, a retrovirus that caused mutations in the human genome and heralded the arrival of a new wave of genetically enhanced humans. Now these changed children have reached adolescence...and face a world that is outraged about their very existence. For these special youths are also ticking time bombs that could exterminate the "old" human race...

I downloaded this book without realizing that it was a sequel to "Darwin's Radio." I was pleasantly suprised to find a sequel that stands on its own merits and doesn't have to retell the original story for the reader to follow along. This book was a riveting listen. The ideas that Bear presents are amazing and the characters are all very real people. Some characters, such as Stella, are developed much more intensely than others but I think that "Darwin's Radio" probably addressed these characters in more detail. This was my first exposure to Greg Bear's science fiction and I can't wait for more! Now, if only Audible would get the unabridged "Darwin's Radio" ...

Anthony Award-winning author Charlaine Harris has earned a devoted fan base with her USA Today and New York Times best-selling Sookie Stackhouse mystery series. All Together Dead features more dark but frequently hilarious adventures of buxom, blonde, beautiful, and telepathic cocktail waitress Sookie, who prefers the company of vampires to that of the living.

This is my favorite of the Sookie Stackhouse books. There's vampire and shapeshifter action, good character development, plenty of action (more than I expected)....but Harris keeps Sookie's charm and likeability intact.

New York Times best-selling author Diana Gabaldon enchanted scores of fans with Outlander, her electrifying historical saga set in 18th-century Scotland. Now this sequel sweeps listeners back into the past as Claire relates more of her perilous sojourn there with her Scottish warrior husband, James Fraser. Twenty years after her strange journey back in time, Claire has returned to Scotland with her daughter, determined to share with her the secret she has harbored since her time travel.

    Overall

I've been a fan of Diana Gabaldon for years, and I was one of the many who wrote to Audible customer service begging to see the unabridged titles in the Outlander series added to the Audible library. At long last...I was so excited when "Outlander" showed up one day. I checked back every week to see when "Dragonfly in Amber" would be posted!

Gabaldon does thorough historical research and has excellent chaacter development in her stories. There is romance, but not so much that I would put the book in that category. There is mystery and magic, action and adventure, intrigue and espionage.

"Dragonfly in Amber" picks up where "outlander" leaves off, but it also carries the listener forward to what the future may hold and sets the next few books up nicely.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

    Overall

I've literally been waiting years for the unabridged versions of the Outlander series to be available on Audible. I've read and reread all the books and heard all of the abridged versions, and there's nothing quite like hearing each word read to you by someone as talented as Davina Porter. This recording is an amazing tapestry of detail, introspection, action, romance, and fantasy that I simply can't stop listening to, even though I know the story by heart. I can only hope that Audible will soon be offering the other titles from this series in unabridged format. Also recommended: the unabridged "Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R.R. Martin and the unabridged "Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan.

Step Fletcher, his pregnant wife DeAnne, and their three children move to Steuben, North Carolina, with high hopes. But Step's new job with a software company turns out to be a snake pit, and 8-year-old Stevie's school is worse. As Stevie retreats into himself, focusing more and more on a mysterious computer game and a growing troop of imaginary friends, the Fletchers' concern turns to terror.

    Overall

This book was certainly a departure from other OSC books I've read. It's nothing like the Ender series or even the Alvin Maker series. It's a suspense novel (or so I was led to believe) but the character development is so thorough and intense that I almost forgot something was supposed to happen. The book also contains a lot of details about life within the Mormon church. It's not preachy at all - the church is a part of the characters' lives so of course it is discussed. All in all, it was a good listen. Well read and a very detailed story. However, if you think you're going to be reading the next Ender's Game, you will be sorely mistaken.
