Whether or not you like Joseph Smith, I think you'll find this book somewhat lacking. If you are LDS and believe Joseph Smith is a true Prophet of God, you'll be disappointed in how skeptical the author is; given his knowledge, background, and the wealth of information he was given for his book. Conversely, if you think Joseph Smith was a pretender and liar; you'll be disappointed in the author's care of Joseph's history and the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The author misses the point that the works of Joseph Smith comprise the keystone of one of the fastest growing Churchs in the world; thus you cannot ride the fence on Joseph Smith or the Book of Mormon; he was either a Prophet or a liar and the Book of Mormon is either a book of God or a book of satan. If you are seeking a definitive characterization of Joseph Smith because you want to know the truth about Joseph, you'll not find it in this book. The author is all over the playing field trying to cover both sides of his issue.
100 People Who Are Screwing Up America (And Al Franken is #37) was truely informative and every now and then, funny too ... the part about Al Franken alone was worth the price and the time - what a GREAT Story. Mr. Goldberg's old fashion ethicial standards are not that old fashion. I wish he could be the censor police for about 30 days, he could clean up radio and TV in half that time.
I recommend this audible book. It makes a great conversation stimulator during a car ride to San Antonio.
One of the best informative Bible studies on how we came to the Bible of today! Some of my absolute favorite scriptures may have been added by scribes in later generations/copies of the Bible ... I am happy to know that. I especially enjoyed how we came to have the last one-third of Revelation in the KJV. Overall, this listen solidified my faith that the Bible is the Word of God, given to His Prophets, and copied, re-copied, and yes sometimes mis-copied by the hands of men/scribes. Why didn't God give Moses and Paul a xerox machine?
If you love the US, you'll love it more after you hear Bob Dole's incredible story ... this is a powerful story about a most-humble US servant. If our youth were given Dole's story for American History class reading/listening today, it would change our nation's future instantly. No politics and no bull ... A MUST-LISTEN.
I had to get this book just to see for myself; Ms Beck accuses her father of the most vial and evil things a man could do to his child. I had to investigate her story.
In her initial chapter, she writes several times of her total confusion, total doubt and totally not knowing the truth and then tries to convince the world of the truth in her words. Who in their right mind would follow a woman who admittedly lied about her faith and trust in God over and over, and in the same breath repeatedly admits she can?t separate truth from fiction? She's not credible.
I listened to her story only because of who she was in the LDS community. Forget that she's lost her pathway in the Church and that someday, when truth matters, rather than her popularity and money, the forgiveness of the earthly father, whom she so evilly abused with these lies and accusations may be important enough for her to finally tell the real story.
You'll find some truth about the Mormons mixed with these stories but it is all twisted up with her story-telling so don't take anything to the bank on Mormons.
Since she's published her book, her ENTIRE family has publically stated that her story is total fiction. Which is where I'd have to put my trust.
Some of her stories are "funny" but when you measure them up against the harm she did to her family and most of all her father, in his final years, it's only sad story. My hat's off to her family for keeping the cork on this bottle until now, but given what she's done to dear old dad ... each of them had better look out too.
