The things you need to get past when it comes to Jim Norton and his humor are your own hangups. Yes, his humor is self-deprecating, yes he employs language some might consider offensive (I don't), but it is HONEST.
Just as in his stand-up act, and in his commentary on the Opie and Anthony show, he is relentlessly, bitingly and emphatically honest about himself, and does not suffer fools or the dishonest very well.
If you choose to get stuck on the hookers or the trannies or the language, it's your great loss.
Norton has a keen wit and is tremendously funny. For me, this book was a pleasure to listen to. I look forward to reading or hearing his next book.
Oh, Right now I can't write a good review...This just a stupid ending... I like happiness...
His unfamiliarity with certain pronunciations extends to Taoism (pronounced "daoism") and bodhisattva, which is most assuredly NOT pronounced "bodhitsattva." Where the extra T comes from is anyone's guess! A most interesting book nonetheless.
The Forever War is science fiction at its best: A commentary on war cast in a science fiction motif.
Haldeman wrote this specifically as a reaction to the Vietnam War, of which he was a veteran. It is dated a bit, given that it posits the availability of collapsar jump technology in the 1990s, but that's just an interesting plot device, not the point of the book.
One reviewer suggests Starship Troopers as a better alternative. I strongly disagree and believe she has missed the point of The Forever War entirely. Starship Troopers is a lot more like Heinlein's version of Plato's Republic, especially clear if you've read his non-science fiction works. The Forever War is no such animal.
In short, I put The Forever War beside Stranger in a Strange Land and Foundation as the best examples of the science fiction genre and well worth your time to listen. Pure and simple.
Mr. Heller singlehandedly ruins this audiobook by drinking too close to the microphone, burping (don't do voice-overs and drink soda!)
This otherwise five-star book loses stars for this distraction.
