I was desperately interested in the content of this book but the narration made me give up. Flat, with an awful buzzing quality to it, and the accent made it worse. Hopefully others don't have the same problem with this fantastic book.
This is an epic series and rightly deserving of its fame; just listen to the sample and decide if the narration works for you before you commit.
Kate Reading is a delightful and versatile narrator but I just could not tune out the way Michael Kramer finished every.single.sentence. like a breathy male Marilyn Monroe. I didn't even get through the first chapter.
I really wish the whole thing had been narrated by Kate (but the books are so long she'd be at it for years!) or that Michael could have skipped the exhale on the last word of every sentence, because I was really looking forward to the whole series.
The subject is still very relevant to women today but the writing has not aged well. The book has an unfortunate tendency towards hyperbole and the authors description of patriarchy in western history and her hypothesis on how it creates the pressure to be beautiful needs to be overhauled in a new edition or taken with a large dose of salt.
This is a topic that is deeply relevant to every woman, feminist or not, and the book doesn't do it justice.
The narration is excellent, Suzy conveys the tone of the writing without making it laughable and is very easy to listen to.
The narration is excellent and made slogging through the writing to get to the underlying truth less painful.
An important topic, but I'd you're already past feminism 101 I'd skim through this in print.
