Jennifer Egan brings her unique gifts as a novelist and short story writer to a compulsively listenable narrative that centers on Bennie Salazar, an aging punk rocker and record executive, and the beautiful Sasha, the passionate, troubled young woman he employs.

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

    Story

I listened to this with my 3 kids, ages 14, 13 and 11. The oldest had already read the book but was eager to listen to it with us. We had a very long drive from New York to Lake Placid and back, and the time just flew! The story had us all enthralled. The reader, however, was a big distraction. My 11 year old daughter took special exception to the way the narrator imitated a 12 year olds'
voice, making her sound like a 4 year old. My older boy, the one who had already read the book, would throw up his hands whenever she voiced the part of the central character, Katness. According to him, Katness is supposed to be a very tough, cool girl and the narrator made her sound like a girly dope. Having said that, the story itself is so strong that it was usually possible for me to get past the annoying quirks of the reader and stay enthralled.

Sensitive, reflective, well written, but dull. My kids would have been very happy to turn it off and not finish it but I made them listen to the end. We kept waiting for a payoff that never came...

Island of the Blue Dolphins is the remarkable story of a strange and beautiful Indian girl who lives a serene and courageous life as the solitary survivor on an island off the California coast. Left behind when the rest of her tribe fled, she waits, year after year, for a ship to come for her. She fights for her very survival, building a shelter, hunting for food, and making weapons to stave off her enemies, the wild dogs who took her brother.

My four kids listened to this book together in the car, and all loved it. The narrator is pitch perfect--the story is wonderful. Will stay with you for a long time.
