Richard Dawkins' brilliant reformulation of the theory of natural selection has the rare distinction of having provoked as much excitement and interest outside the scientific community as within it. His theories have helped change the whole nature of the study of social biology, and have forced thousands to rethink their beliefs about life.

    Story

This is a very good book which is both informative on the subject of genes themselves, but also serves as a kind of historical overview of changing ideas, and why they were discarded or affirmed.

Dawkins, as always, is given to digressions that could be considered by some, to be tedious. Even so, a bit of patients is rewarded well by way of learning.

    All in all... Excellent.

this book is not light in content, so even though Dawkins does an exception job in explaining things with clarity, it is not for someone looking to kill a bit of time. Attention is required to get the most of this book.

In 1994, Driven to Distraction sparked a revolution in our understanding of attention deficit disorder. Now a second revolution is under way in the approach to ADD, and the news is great. Drug therapies, our understanding of the role of diet and exercise, even the way we define the disorder, all are changing radically. And doctors are realizing that millions of adults suffer from this condition, though the vast majority of them remain undiagnosed and untreated.

    Story

This is not only full of good information about ADD, it is enjoyable. The Author creates a no stress approach in reading about the disorder. (which I have)

There are many helpful hints and ideas, but more than that, the Author does a great job in helping to put guilt and frustration into perspective; and more importantly, how to deal with them. Understanding what ADD is the key to unlocking its potential of very fulfilling life and a productive one,

Growing up with the disorder, I could totally relate to the people discussed in this book. The stories are that of real people finding real answers.

If you are someone else has ADD, please get this book - it will make a huge difference.

Why evolution is more than just a theory: it is a fact. In all the current highly publicized debates about creationism and its descendant "intelligent design", there is an element of the controversy that is rarely mentioned: the evidence, the empirical truth of evolution by natural selection.

This book lays out information in a sensible order. As one who has been in many debates regarding origins, I find the author`s approach to be sensible and easy to understand. It is not that evidence for evolution is scarce, it is a matter of understanding it where the challenge comes sometimes: this book makes it easy.

    I highly recommend this book

The Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, here elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars", he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion, those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way.

As always, the Dalai Lama brings vision and hope for mankind in general, regardless of your religious affiliation or back round. The ideas discussed in the book are rather universal, but important none the less.

    Most enjoyable.

The Druids have been known and discussed for at least 2,400 years, first by Greek writers and later by the Romans, who came in contact with them in Gaul and Britain. According to these sources, they were a learned caste who officiated in religious ceremonies, taught the ancient wisdoms, and were revered as philosophers. But few figures flit so elusively through history, and the Druids remain enigmatic and puzzling to this day.

This is a very well put together book.

Yes, it is short, but the author makes a good job of explaining who the Druids were and what their place is in history was. Be prepared to enlightened, frightened and entertained as this book take you on a journey that is both informative and entertaining.

    Well done!

I highly recommend this book as an overview of some of the most mysterious people, in history.

In 28 days, my blood pressure went from 139 over 85 to 113 over 65. I lost 23 pounds, sleep better and feel amazing. My blood sugar (on meds) would spike up to 13.3 and at the end of 28 days... 5.4 (I am now off meds but am still monitoring - If I cheat, my levels rise - we are what we eat)

Do NOT underestimate how potentially powerful this eating system can be, if you first understand it, and second, follow it. I recently had my blood pressure checked again, and with activity, it was 120 over 68.

Not bad at all considering. Read it, understand it, use it and enjoy weight loss feeling full with more foor than are before I started this diet and now enjoy amazing health results. (When I first started this system of eating, I weighed in at 303 pounds)

I generally enjoy vampire lore: after having a listen to this version (The first time have been through Dracula of any version) I confess myself struggling to put this book into a frame. Certainly one has to take the historical context in to consideration; even so, it was BORING. The narrator's version of Van Helsing was annoying at best. I had to force myself to even finish it. The ending was a huge let down. The modern vampire has a biology/gene base, where as this has an old world religious perspective. It is hard to make the jump. If there is any good to this, it is that of having the discipline to finish it and purely for the "I did it" factor. Nothing to listen to hear folks - Move along... move along.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.

To be honest, I found myself laughing in several places, angry in others, wanting to enter the world that was created by the author and grateful not to be in in the situations the characters found themselves in at times. The listener is in good hands with this author and the narrator did a fantastic job. Pros? Several. Clever, fun, great visuals, emotional ups and downs, twists and turns and characters that are enjoyable. Also, being a male, I am not a huge fan of romance per say, but this was VERY well done. I could relate to both characters. It is flirty and fun, sexual, but not crude. As a male listener, it was a treat.

Cons? Well, there is an element that is predictable and this book certainly does fit into a type profile. The book is clearly part of series (Which I did not realize when I bought it) so will have to get the next book. In some places, the lead character seems over helpless while in others, unstoppable. There was one event where one of the main characters seems to depart from how the character should be, but just the same, it is forgivable.

All in all? It is an enjoyable way to spend some time in a world of witches, vampires, demons and humans, and I very much enjoyed the clever humour of the author. It is well studied and presented - WORTH THE MONEY.

A subcommittee of the Kansas Board of Education holds hearings on whether the state's science curriculum should permit alternate theories to be taught alongside evolution. They are represented by a retired lawyer, John Calvert, who heads the Intelligent Design Network of Shawnee Mission, Kansas.

    Story

If you are looking for an instructive addition to the evolution vs creation/intelligent design debate, this is very much a one trick pony, As you go through part one, part two etc, you hear the concerns/claims of the Creation/ID camp. Some of it, sounds reasonable and you wait to hear the opposite rebuttal from the evo crowd. It is a rebuttal that never happens. After having spent several long hours listening through the entire set of "debates", (one sided opinions as the creationist offer their side of the argument first) those representing the evolution camp, refuse to debate when it is their turn.

They do not answer because they cannot, they do not answer because to them, there is no debate and that these trails cost the tax payers considerable money. It is annoying that they simply do not offer resonable evidence as to why evolution is true and quell the argument that way; They simply refuse to be involved.

Some may think that this is admitting that evolution is not fact, therefore creationism should be taught in schools as well, but it is not.

I can understand why evolutionist do not validate the ID perspective, but I understand how evolution works. I know about Lenski's work with bacteria that it shows two random mutations that are a benifit to a organism, therefore, evolution. (Look up Lenski''s work for the details if you are interested, or Read Richard Dawkin's book "The Greatest Show on Earth" for details)

So, If you are looking for a well laid out debate, this is not it. Not by a long shot. The information that is offered on the creationist side is false, (for some of it) and the Evolution camp simply does not respond.

    A complete waste of time

Rarely in a lifetime does a new spiritual classic appear that has the power to change people's lives and transform future generations. This is such a book. The Essence of the Bhagavad Gita: Explained by Paramhansa Yogananda shares the profound insights of Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi, as remembered by one of his few remaining direct disciples, Swami Kriyananda.

I was merely looking for an overview as to what the Bhagvad Gita was... instead, I found myself immersed into a conversation that concerns the finer details of the book. I also ended up with a lot of opinion and speculations about other religions - This is not what I was after.

So, if you want to be bathed in the personal opinions and teachings of Swami Kriyananda's, then this is a winner. If you are merely looking for a general, greater understanding, it may be best to look else where.

On the plus side though, the narrator has a very soothing voice.
